My situation is I have an existing roof some of which are factory GI in the original section of the house and orginary GI in the extension which I had built over the years, but I never had a problem of leakage with the original section but had numerous disastrous incidents with the extensions.

Now, I'm interested to have this asphalt shigngle roofs, my roofing structure underneath are all steel WOULD THIS WORK with me? Will this guarantee me of a leak free roof?

Thanks,

Re: Asphalt Shingle Roofs

Asphalt shingle roofs need a minimum slope of 1 in 4 meaning, 1 meter rise for every 4 meters run. Look at your roof plan and see if the roof has slopes that are at least this minimum.

Asphalt shingle roofs are better at valleys than GI roofs that are notorious for leaking at valleys. So if you have a complicated roof plan, asphalt shingle roofs might be a good choice.

Will the roof purlins support asphalt shingles? Yes, the dead load of asphalt shingles is not much more than standard GI. The thinnest shingle weighs 220 lbs per 100 square feet, or in builders parlance 220 lbs per square. The plywood should weigh around 3 lbs per sq ft.

The other thing to consider is the spacing of the purlins. They should be spaced at the widest 0.8 meters. The other problem is that the spacing of the purlins may not be appropriate for plywood, meaning that a spacing of 0.9 or 1.0 meters will mean that there will be no support for the ends of the plywood. There will be a need to add more purlins, or respace the purlins.

Re: Asphalt Shingle Roofs

My purlins are appropriate, the only thing in my mind now is how much would this cost? And this could be executed in how many days tops?

Re: Asphalt Shingle Roofs

Approximately how many square meters is the roof? The shingles on my roof, which is 88 sq meters, was put on in just 3 days. The plywood was put on in also 3 days. Figure at least another 3 days to remove the old GI. Note, junk shops buy old GI.

Right now I have no idea of cost, but you may want to call Riviera Filipina or other suppliers. Send them your roof plan and they will give you a free quotation.

Re: Asphalt Shingle Roofs

Leaking roof is generally a homeowner's nightmare especially during the rainy season. I don't think asphalt shingle roofing will do the trick since it doesn't guarantee 100% non leaking roof. As far as I know, they're only good in high pitched roof with plywood backing. If you have an existing roof steel framing, you will only double the cost notwithstanding it is labor intensive. If you have the moolah and you want to change the roofing character of your house, then by all means. Usually, leaking in GI roofing starts with valleys, inside gutters, tex screw connections and flshings. Get a latero and have it checked first.

You may also want to contact Multiline Philippines. I think they quote per sqm basis.

imho palitan mo ng pre-painted long span yung extension area mo, tapos iyang problem mo...madami nito sa pasay-edsa extension area...madami ka pang kulay at design na pagpipilian...

Re: Asphalt Shingle Roofs

Thanks gents, guess I'd go for the long span when funds become available. Or for the meantime latero talaga ang stop gap measure, am I aiming on the right angle here latero meaning hihinangin niya yung mga sapi ng existing roofing ko using lead yung tinutunaw.

I guess this would live to about the next 10 years right?
