just by going around provinces you see dried bamboo that has a whitish color, the wood needs little finish if you and them sturdy (they are sturdy on their own) but if you want them to look nice or last a little longer than their regular untreated life, I suggest you use some spar vanish...

You need wood preservative sa bamboo to avoid molds & fungi. You can use leadrite 25 available at HM Trading.

Some options:
Toxic and fixing (?)
-- Insects: Cislin or Woodtec (deltamethrin)
-- Fungi: Farmay or Leadrite (propiconazole) as mentioned
-- Insects + Fungi: Solignum (permethrin + propiconazole + tebuconazole)

Less toxic but non-fixing (?)
-- Boric acid, borax
-- Ethylene glycol (automotive coolant)

Has anyone used bamboo for outdoor use? Does it need wood presevative?

I'll be installing bamboo fence around our house. I noticed that bamboo already has a protective film/skin which repells water.

However, both ends (cut ends), and some parts along the body (where the leaves were attached I think) are rough and could possibly absorb water.

I have used bamboo likewise as fence here in our farm and it did not last long also. As like any type of wood it is also porous in nature so when left in the open absorbs water specially during rainy days.

Applying wood preservatives like SOLIGNUM clear for anti rot and against termite attacks, then after the solignum dries out follow it up with two coats again of PHENOSEAL, its a clear liquid waterproofing for concrete, bricks and wood, well with these preservatives it will prolong the life of your bamboo.

Glad to have found this thread as we will be repairing our bamboo/wood fence also, but i cant seem to find phenoseal here in cebu (or havent search that much yet). how much does it cost? also, any alternatives to phenoseal? like a waterproofing paint perhaps? tia..

Try looking for it at SM Ace hardwares or at ROBINSONS Do it Best hardwares , if there are these malls in your place., its more or less 350.00 php per liter, medyo a bit expensive but solignum brown is almost the same price coz I just bought one recently in a neighborhood hardware store.

Oh I just remembered, you can check out also or try using CUPRINOL wood preservatives. !!!!
