I'm about to build a new boat measuring 18' x 8'. I figure I'll need a covered space of about 22' x 12'. I'm undecided on whether to build a shed (permanent) or just a shelter (lower cost).

If I go with a shelter, I am thinking a tarp roof and even walls. I built one before using bamboo and sacolene. I worked well enough during the summer but when the rainy season started it was utterly destroyed. It cost about P3k in materials: P1.5k for the bamboo and P1k+ for the sacolene. It took a few days though to assemble because we had to tie up the bamboo, etc. Oh but this was HUGE, maybe 24' x 24'. My biggest mistake was making it too high, maybe 15'.

My next build will take about a 12 to 18 months. So a temporary shelter will do again but maybe I'd like to make a more permanent structure. So I'm open to suggestions. Help?

The only other constraint is that there cannot be a post on the 12' side, or else the boat won't come out.

Please suggest materials and the estimated cost.

Re: Building Shed/Shelter

hmm... according to your post, you would need the shed/shelter for 12-18 months or throughout the duration of your boat project. Depending on the time of year you start, you'd be looking at atleast 1-2 rainy seasons to pass by during the span of time you need your shed/shelter. Based on your previous shelter experience, it got destroyed during the rainy season. Here's what I think...
If your experience with the previous shelter has taught you a point or two with regards to making it sturdier for one or two rainy season, this would be the most cost-efficient route IF there wouldn't be any more boat projects immediately after this one.
However, if the shelter design has been stretched to the limit already, i.e. no more improvements as to its durability during the rainy seasons, the shed might be a good idea. But then, you'd have to consider future projects, if any, so that you'd be able to build a shed that you need not modify should you require a bigger space for a bigger boat project. And even if you don't have any boat projects immediately after this one and depending on your shed's design, you could probably use it for other purposes too.

.02 hth.

PS: out of curiousity, what material is the boat gonna be made of? tia

Safety first - always wear face/eye/ear/hand protection as a minimum.

Re: Building Shed/Shelter

Thanks B2Bomber. The boat is marine plywood covered with fiberglass and epoxy. The epoxy is not the kind that normally comes to mind. The epoxy is pure epoxy and has very low viscosity. The normal kind already has fillers.

As for the shelter. Maybe I should use good canvas, Maruyama, on a disposable frame. This way I can always reuse the canvas.
