Concrete roofdeck= ang init sa loob ng bahay

Hi guys!

Need some advise, my house has a full concrete roof/roofdeck...yeah its nice to have all that space above for tambay purposes but recently i felt one major downside: ang init sa loob ng bahay pag gabi na, parang oven 🙁

i assume its due to all that sun the concrete absorbs during the day re-radiates inside the house during nightfall...

Is there anything i can do about this? Exhaust fans sa loob ng bahay? Re paint the roofdeck with something that can somewhat 'reflect' some of the heat away?

Thanks in advance!

Hello too Paolod,

WELCOME to PHM community but please do introduce yourself first here in the forum. I see that you joined us last April and had made a post already. We encourage new members to share some intro or information so we'd know you better as a new member. Just down the index page and right under the GAZEBO Forum is the MEMBER INTRODUCTIONS. Perhaps you can give us some info on your hobbies or interest in DIYing. Maybe your location as well and your line of work etc etc.... Well nothing really that is too personal for you.

Thanks

rosy

Going back to your query on hot temp. inside your house during the nights, well you are right, your concrete roof deck is really absorbing and storing all the heat and then releasing them heat on the other side of the concrete specially during night time.

If your house inside has already a ceiling, better tear if down and install some insulation under that concrete roofing slab. You can buy this insulations at mall hardware stores or home depots, sold per roll. May I suggest you get the thick one that is double sided with foils, once installed, I assure you the inside of your house will be cooler, after its installation, then you can put your ceilings back. 😎

Better also to install one or two exhaust fan at strategic locations preferably near your ceilings, purpose of this is to disperse hot air trapped inside your house.

Another way is to install some translucent roofing on your deck to somehow reduce those direct
sunlight being absorbed by the concrete slab. 😉

Hope this helps !! 😀

I have a roofdeck too but never had this problem, maybe your slab is not thick enough to shield your house from heat.

Can't really comment without more information, save for this:
Armand's right that RC slab thickness is key. Photos of your deck, and
of the interior space under it, would help frame PHM responses better.

^That sort-of-disclaimer out of the way, you could garden your roof
(assuming youy haven't already) and use foliage to reduce insolation,
and improve your deck's appeal as well. A sturdy trellis with vines would
work wonders for keeping most of the sun's fury off your deckslab.

Yes, it's a small added responsibility to water and care for the plants,
but it's environmentally-responsible to green your roof.
Reduce your carbon footprint, 'di ba?

Smart and very good suggestion...ganyan sana ang gagawin sa bahay ko roofdeck tapos lagyan ng konting garden para presko.kaso kulang sa budget ayun nauwi sa yero hehehe!:(

Having a roof deck garden and with the rest of its amenities, the trellis, furniture, a little portable kitchen with a grille/smoker perhaps and of course the assorted plants that will make that roof deck beautiful, very functional and environmental friendly. Yes its the in thing now for those with roof decks. Only problem will be for the home owners, if they've got the green thumb and the patience to care for the various plants needed to make that roof deck green and probably help in the reduction of direct heat absorption by the RC slab.

Re: Concrete roofdeck= ang init sa loob ng bahay

prob with garden maintenance..

and maintenance = to money

if you want a solution that build and forget it "but not totally forget it" meaning less maintenance

go for roof. be sure to make it at least 3-4 meter if you plan to use it during the day, so that the heat of the steel roof is not near you.

or you may also do suspended ceiling. but use gypsum board if possible. and P.E. insulation bet the concrete slab and suspended ceiling.

NOTE: always put an air gap in you case concrete slab bet. P.E. insulation. the air gap will serve as a barrier for the heat no to transfer directly to the insulation.

and possible if you can put exhaust in the ceiling, one in and one out to pull out the trap hot air inside.

why gypsum. correct me if im wrong.. cement board are also good in heat abortion that gypsum board. but prob with gypsum board is very fragile on water.

i feel what you felt. because we have the same situation. the diff. is im renting so its not recommended for me to spend my money here.. hehe

In your experience, what is the recommended slab thickness to minimize heat? TIA! 🙂

Re: Concrete roofdeck= ang init sa loob ng bahay

share ko lang bro, i have a concrete roofdeck too, slab thickness is 5".

i had your problem last summer, sobrang init, fortunately, i live in an elevated place so malamig ung hangin sa labas pag gabi. so i just made removable window panes out of plywood with lots of exhaust fans. pag summer, i use all the 4 12" fans as soon as i arrive from work and in 15mins, malamig na ung house. 🙂

there is also a some sort of an insulating paint. ill look for the link first. baka pwede un sa roofdeck
