My steel-encased glass windows are supported along sides by a glass putty. I have noticed that cracks and chipping occur everytime (specially summer months), and have to re-apply glass putty on affected portions. Is there any long term solution for this??
Re: Cracks & chips on glass windows' putty
Nowadays, glass installers are using silicon sealant instead of your mentioned putty. Mine is also putty and what I did to prevent those cracks and chips was I painted it. Since I need to paint the steel casement too, I used Hammerite brand (quite expensive) but lasts for 6 years now. You dont even need to use rust converter, epoxy paints, just apply it directly. Since then no repainting was ever done to this date. And believe me, nor rust still as of this writing 😮

Same problem. I'm thinking of completely removing the putty from my windows and replace it with silicone.

Re: Cracks & chips on glass windows' putty
Silicone was applied to my windows instead of putty and I have problems with water going through the glass. If you are hiring someone to do it for you, you have to make sure that they apply the silicone properly. Otherwise you'll end up with problems like mine.
Most of my windows are okay now except those on higher places because I wasn't able to supervise the workers from there. I keep on calling my contractor to fix the windows every now and then until they do it perfectly. The recent rains helped me test the leaks. But still the same... I'm pissed off with my contractor.
Re: Cracks & chips on glass windows' putty
glass putty's curing time is 60+ days, it must be hardened before you apply paints so it wont crack.
also, using silicone sealant is better and neater and as what fgvillegas said, you should apply it perfectly to seal it. but using only silicone sealant will leave a big gap on all sides of glass and can stack up water or dusts. so i suggest after applying silicone sealant on glass to z bar, ask your contractors to put counter nosing aluminum around it and another layer of silicone
Re: Cracks & chips on glass windows' putty
You can use some sealant easily available in the market. You can search for different kind of sealants online too.Usually i use silicon sealants you can try that.
