Custom stairs and rails will cost you a lot hope this will encourage you to do it your self incase you are planning to build your house or remodeling your stair. This is a simple one not that fancy.
The wood is Tangile 2 x 4 tama ba spelling this wood always confuses me I mean what is real Tangile.
And the back recess.
Made stock using 3 router bits.
Re: Stair Rails DIY.
Test fit and plan your joinery.
This is one of the several challenges you may encounter it has a 98° turn and a 38° drop so I have to twist a wood.
Re: Stair Rails DIY.
This is the easy part quarter round turn.
Re: Stair Rails DIY.
And how its made. Start with a jig for the router.
Line your stock and circle cutting jig works like a compass.
Re: Stair Rails DIY.
Two pass will give you a perfect quarter round circle .
Finishing the cut at the table saw.
Pre assembling.

Re: Stair Rails DIY.
And another challenge. I have to fabricate a “S” figure rail. It starts with 4 x 6 x 12” glue Tangile cut to the “ S “ like figure.
Re: Stair Rails DIY.
And to the router table to give its profile.
I strongly suggest to use a starting pin when doing this operation.

Re: Stair Rails DIY.
Now for the 98° turn and a 38° drop. Start with 6 x 6 x 23” Tangile quarter round and curve.
It is much easier if you have a large cutting capacity band saw to cut this.
Re: Stair Rails DIY.
Installing and final sanding.
Re: Stair Rails DIY.
I choose shellac to finish my rail.
After 10 coats of Shellac.
Re: Stair Rails DIY.
Re: Stair Rails DIY.
the problem using shellac is it will not hide any imperfections, suggest you apply a light glaze just to have a consistent color brader. The work you put on them is fantastic, I don't think I would even atempt one (wala kaming 2nd floor eh :D))
how long did it take you to polish the shellac?
nahahawa ka na kay Jonathan brader, Work In Pinish na rin kasi yan eh 😀
click my signature and it will take you there........
Re: Stair Rails DIY.
nice wips bro!
i could not imagine the time you spent figuring out that "S"..but it turned out just right.
would you not top the shellac with poly? for protection?
from what i see, there are still lots of finishing to be done in your enclave...but bit by bit i know you are enjoying it. hope you have more time to work on them.
cheers!
