Re: DIY Stair rails

Continuation………………….
Because the stairs are attach to concrete steps there’s no way of avoiding gaps because of the unevenness of the concrete .

To remedy this I decided to put aprons on the steps it will help dress up the stairs.

Because I will rip several pieces of wood I will be needing help from a jig. Luckily I happen to have this.

To make a featherboard.

Re: DIY Stair rails

There is a fancy router bit for this kind of profile called “multi profile bit” available at Panda but very pricey so this is how I made those profile........:hammer:.........

I happen to have a ½ “ cove bit and beading bit starts with the cove bit set up on the RT.

Re: DIY Stair rails

Need 4 pass to get my desire height.

Then a ½ “ beading bit w/o the bearing to finish the profile.

Re: DIY Stair rails

Now to create a perfect miter end , will use this for the returns.

To glue this I used masking tape to act as a clamp very effective when gluing miters.

Install it to the steps, clamp the long part dry.

Re: DIY Stair rails

This is a no no for a woodworker never glue up end grain to long grain , but I guest I need a tight fit so gluing them is my best option.

And to reinforce and minimized wood movement I just install screw and plug it with dowel.

Re: DIY Stair rails

Manage to install all apron and test fit.

Looks pretty promising to me except for the sharp edges will round over it later.

Re: DIY Stair rails

Check the edges for alignment.

Check also the fit of the apron.

Now for the router to round over the edge.

Re: DIY Stair rails

Then apply 3 coats of waterborne poly at the back of the steps to seal it in.
