I usually hire a pro painter to do the painting chores sa bahay. Before taga bili lang ako ng materyales, I want to DIY it now.

1. Nakikita ko yung pintor na nag mi-mix ng paint thinner sa pintura. Ilang ba ratio ng thinner per gallon?

2. What brand of paint can you recommend?

3. Nilalason or nilalagyan pa ba ng primer yung mga freshly installed plywood ceiling?

:thanks:

Re: DIY wall and ceiling painting

Hehehe gusto mo magkalat bro ha.

1. Yung ratio kadalasan tantya system, but if you will follow most paint company's recommendation they will say no dilution necessary ESP for house paints like latex and QDE (quick drying enamels). Now if you are using acrylics and lacquers then they have suggested dilution. Usually dilution depends on how you will apply the paint. Syempre ayaw mo ng matalsik, wag mo labnawan, ayaw mo ng makapal e wag mo laputan.

2.boysen for local and Ace for imported

3.yes you have to prime it with FLAT WALL enamel, then top coat it with either enamel or latex, gloss, semi-gloss or flat depending on your requirement. Yung nilalason, for newly cemented walls Lang. For wood no need, although you can apply wood preservatives(for anay) before you paint it with primer.

Re: DIY wall and ceiling painting

iirc, latex gamit ng pintor namin sa wall and semi-gloss/gloss enamel sa ceiling. tama ba?
in the boysen website, they're recommending using clean water as thinning liquid for their Permacoat latex product

water ang pang dillute sa latex and paint thinner sa mga enamel?

Re: DIY wall and ceiling painting

permatex is water based.
i don't use enamel much, baho kasi. i used latex for walls and ceiling, auto laquer for doors and jambs.
they told me boysen was more cost effective than cheaper brands, because of greater actual coverage.

Yes bro migs26, for concrete walls its latex paint, flat, semi-gloss or gloss, which ever you choose and for your ceiling, if its wood or gypsum board, it can be flat or gloss enamel, but if your ceiling is hardiflex or the other fiber cement board brand, you may also use the semi-gloss latex paint. :p 🙂

Right you are, for latex paint, it's always water na pang dillute at pang hugas ng brushes, and for enamel paint naman, you thin it with paint thinner., you can use paint thinner or kerosene to clean your brushes. 😉

And for acrylic lacquer paints, of course I use lacquer thinner.
HOPE THIS HELPS bro and good luck on your painting job sa bahay. :dog1:

Re: DIY wall and ceiling painting

I dont think lacquer thinner can be used for Acrylic paint. I once tried lacquer thinner on acrylic clear coat and it did not mix right. Acrylic thinner on the other hand can be used for lacquer paints.

Re: DIY wall and ceiling painting

whatever the solvent, you can temporariy store the rollers and brushers in water if you need to call it a day. 🙂

Re: DIY wall and ceiling painting

Yes bro zepol, sometimes I do wonder why it works that way, simply leave your brushes or rollers in a pale with water and the next day malambot pa rin ang mga yon, he he he

Re: DIY wall and ceiling painting

err, it wont dry because its not exposed to air but won't the water mess with the paint specially with the enamels? You can't really remove all the water from the brush or roller..

Re: DIY wall and ceiling painting

above photo of the bathroom ceiling was painted with the following schedule.

1.putty the plywood ( i use RJ acrylic putty)
2.sand smooth the putty (use sandpaper grit 320)
3.cut the plywood to size.
4.install plywood..putty the plywood seams using white paintable silicone...let it dry for 1 hour at least..
5.directly paint it using an acrylic paint..my favorite is Sun and Rain brand (by Davies paints).
6. after 1 hour...
7. apply the second coat
8. after 1 hour...
9. apply the third and final coat.
10. admire the beauty.

Pros in using acrylics...(versus enamel)
1. dries quickly (30 minutes and dry to touch)..newly painted room can be used almost immediately..(well 2 days for sure to let the vapors out)
2. water based..easy on the brush...no need for harmful paint thinners
3. siliconized (waterproof) and elastic
4. less odour
5. now in plastic cans..(reusable for pocket gardens..i use these cans to grow my tomatoes)
...enamels on tin cans..they corrode in a year even if unopened and when exposed to moisture..
6. with more than 50 premixed colors!
7. when used exteriorly, they can resists UV light far better than enamels.

Re: DIY wall and ceiling painting

the photo above showing the light green wall underwent the same painting schedule

1. putty the wall using an acrylic putty..(my favorite is RJ acrylic putty).
2. sand smooth the putty
3. vacuum the wall for the dust left by sanding..pwede na din walis tambo or big utility brush
4. apply the first coat of my favorite sun and rain premixed acrylic semi gloss paint using a 4 inch roller brush
5. wait for 30 minutes to one hour
6. apply the second coat
7. wait for 30 minutes to one hour..
8. apply the third and final coat
9. install the prepainted moldings (this is woodworking job)
10..admire your work.

another pros on using acrylics..

very easy to clean...since its siiliconized..you can clean smudges/dirt very easily using a damp cloth

to each his own btw..but i have to say i went also through the old school of painting using old technologies..i.e. flat wall then enamel on wood.

Re: DIY wall and ceiling painting

@violaine

Can you use acrylic over latex? I've got a high-traffic area to repaint, parang attractive nga to use exterior paint on it so it keeps clean. Kaso lang, it was already painted over with latex paint 7 years ago. I had the walls wet and scraped, most of the latex paint is still there - hindi na practical to strip it. Kakapit kaya yung sun and rain diyan?

@rosy
why it works? Well of kung water based paint, the water keeps the brush soft. However, the water immersion also seals the paint thinner/laquer thinner from air, so in effect it keeps your brushes in an airtight environment. The result is that the paint thinner does not evaporate or cure, and the brush remains as soft as it was when you left it. Ii used to clean and dry each brush daily after use, and was skeptical when the workers told me about this. I was amazed at the results 🙂

Re: DIY wall and ceiling painting

@ violaine,

Ehem V, Mahilig ka pala sa mga pastel colors ha, which are not bad color choice at all, napaka lamig sa mata ng walls and ceiling mo, plus your proceedure sa pag paint ng ceiling and walls were all correct . 😉

Well what else can I say, simply just like what you said, step back and " ADMIRE THE BEAUTY and ADMIRE YOUR WORK " , nice V on your color choice, its so :cool01:

@ zepol,

Yes definitely bro, you can paint acrylics on latex pre painted walls. Acrylics and latex paints are compatible, you can even add some acrylic emulsions on latex paints so that when you paint using latex, magiging mas matibay at makapit mga molecules ng two properties. The binding of paints on walls will become more stronger plus the acrylics will help seals the paint's porousity.

As an artist and a painter, that is what we have been using as base on our canvas, GESSO or LATEX paints mixed with some acrylic emulsions so that when painted or spread by putty knife
the combined latex and acrylics would strongly adheres to the canvas fibers. We even sometimes use the semi gloss latex/acrylic paints because when applied and dried on canvas, no matter how you fold or crumple that piece of canvas, the semi gloss latex/acrylic paint does not crack nor peel nor would turn powder, it is the acrylics that binds the paint molecules together specially both of them are water base but when dried the paints becomes tough and solid. :p
