Re: DIY wall and ceiling painting
@rosy
thanks so much for the info. All the paints on the market get confusing, so i tend to just follow instructions on the back of the can, which is not always very informative.
Re: DIY wall and ceiling painting
sorry i dont use brush to apply stain..brush tends to be messy with stains since stains are not that viscous and behave much like the consistency of water.
i have been using gauze since 1993 and wont exchange it with brush..using gauze...you can control the depth of the stain right away..of course i started applying stain with brush before but i will never go back to that ever again...to each his own.
madami kasi akong supply ng gauze..sa laboratory...pero pede din any piece of clean rag..old cotton clothes..da best din yun...yung sponge kasi nalulusaw ng stains..oil based kasi.
and as much as possible i keep my hands protected with these violet nitrile gloves because ordinary latex gloves can be easily destroyed by these oil based stains..of course kung wala kang nitrile gloves, pwede na din yung sando bags ng SM supermarket!
see photo below
like ko kasi yung malamig sa mata talaga...para less clutter ang utak habang nagwu woodwork..pag makulay masyado sa woodshop eh nakakadistract..besides i can use that light green wall as background sa finished woodworks..good contrast.
@zepol/axilla,
like rosy says..acrylic will bind to the latex...much more avidly than the enamel (if in case it was previously painted with enamels..in which case you just need to rub it with 320 grit sandpaper to stick the acrylic to the oil based enamel)...
good that acrylics were invented..it can adhere to almost any surface..be it latex or enamel..
basta in previously painted surfaces..you need to rub sand it first before the acrylics..
acrylics in fact can be applied right away..because it is self priming..wala ng hokus pokus..
sa concrete ganun din...self priming sha kasi..pero you need to putty the fresh concrete...dapat acrylic putty din siyempre...but i recommend to dry the first coat for at least a day before the 2nd coat...yung 3rd coat kahit 30 minutes na lang in between..and consequent coats..
i would say for the most presentable...i will coat it four times lalo na sa living room.

ot na ito pero id like to add this in the care of your expensive brushes...
after the final rinse with either mineral spirits/paint thinner or laquer thinner..do not forget to finally clean your brush with soapy solution..dishwashing liquid is fine..
ipagpag ang brush after rinse at ibalot sa dry rag at pigain...air dry...and after drying...find a piece of newspaper at balutin..i fold yung sobrang newspaper sa dulo ng bristles at lagyan ng rubber band at i hang...
this way..the bristles are protected and the extra moisture will be absorbed by the paper.

Acrylics and latex paints are compatible, you can even add some acrylic emulsions on latex paints so that when you paint using latex, magiging mas matibay at makapit mga molecules ng two properties. The binding of paints on walls will become more stronger plus the acrylics will help seals the paint's porousity.
Did I understand this correctly: one can mix acrylic emulsion into latex paint to improve the latter, and to facilitate the binding of a subsequent arcylic topcoat? If so, can regular acrylic emulsion be used? Also, in what proportion would you mix it? Will you follow the thinning guidelines of the paint, substituting the acrylic emulsion for water?
Thanks!
Plz give me advice po tnx
For concrete applications, use the semi gloss acrytex (acrylic latex), this is a water base paint. For wood applications, you can use flat wall paint or if you prefer semi gloss enamel paint. Make sure lang na hahaluin mo ang paint properly before applying on the wall.
With regards to the "un-dried paint" better to roughen the wall with a coarse sand paper to remove the un-dried emulsion before applying your new coat of paint.
Hope this helps. ;):D
