Need a little help here mga masters, i've googled before that a 50/50 mix of engine oil with diesel or kerosene will make for a good wood preservative, has anyone in our community tried this before?
Tsaka would flammability be a concern specially during the summer heat that could sometimes reach 40deg. yata?
TIA for your inputs.

Re: Engine oil for wood fence waterproofing?

Not sure about waterproofing but I know that's the old school anti termite for ceiling rafters.

If you can afford it, I'd recommend epoxy paint or resin. Completely waterproof. If you use the resin, you will need to coat with exterior PU varnish for antiUV.

Is th fence erected already or still to be built? I'm asking because, if built already, you will need to think about how to protect the footings as well which, I assume are either embedded in the ground or concrete.

Re: Engine oil for wood fence waterproofing?

Its still to be built sir, i got some used wood from a construction project to make a makeshift fence in a lot at the back of our house, the thing is its not our property but the owners let us do some gardening in there para siguro mas madaling ibenta as opposed to having shanties in it because some squatters are slowly inching their way towards us, kaya were looking for the most cost effective way to erect a fence since mga 3-5 years pa daw bago idevelop.

Is there a particular brand of epoxy paint that you would recommend sir? Though I wont be using it on the fence, im planning to do a kitchen cabinet w/ a sink in the future, is it available at wilcon or any hardware?

Cant post the link sir but youre right, it says wood preservative pala di waterproofing.

Practically any marine epoxy paint should do. There is also Polymer Products in Pasig (near C5), just google it. I'm into boatbuilding and I use a resin sold by a private boatbuilder from Taytay.

Applying epoxy paint, though, may be a challenge for beginners. Read this thread and decide for yourself: http://www.pinoyhandyman.com/showthread.php?t=1543

Re: Engine oil for wood fence waterproofing?

Instead of motor oil, how about coolant/antifreeze. Try web search for 'ethylene glycol wood preservative', especially the article by Dave Carnell, Chemotherapy for Rot. If I understand correctly, ethylene glycol can stand on its own as the only treatment, better than a boric acid/borax solution which would leach out quicker when exposed to weather. It may require reapplication every so many years, but I don't remember seeing a definite prescription for how frequently.

If you are interested in epoxy over ethylene glycol, look for the adhesion study by Gougeon Brothers/West System, which above web search should lead to.

Other options for topcoat after ethylene glycol treatment might be marine/spar varnish and polyurethane for exterior use.

If you want a toxic solution, there's always Solignum, costing about P350/L (or P1,000/4L). Whereas I used to get a locally branded/repacked coolant for ~P190/L. After 50/50 dilution, comes out to P95/L. Anyone know where to get coolant at better prices than that? Must be ethylene glycol and concentrated (not pre-diluted a.k.a. 'ready to use').

Re: Engine oil for wood fence waterproofing?

Hi bongski214,

Here in my place we still use wood as poste for fence painted with old engine oil dilute with little diesel for easier application. The wooden post are alternated by concrete posts so to strengthen the fence so to speak 'til the time a concrete wall will be constructed for a more sturdier and stronger fence.

Well used oil is an alternative choice and its cheaper than a can of wood preservatives, the used motor oil is also good for an anti anay applications. Termites hates the taste of wood soaked in used motor oil.
