Re: Glass & Glazing Works

I like the look of the application. bryant77 did budget permit? on a similar note, wife and i are extending our terrace, we built a trellis out of 2"x4" tubular steel, we really would like to cover the trellis with glass, seems 1/2" tempered is the way to go? ideally would like it seamless for water drainage, the area we wish to cover is roughly 12 feet by 12 feet. We had a glass shop come by to take measurements and give an estimate. Just for the glass and necessary support framework with installation was estimated at 106,000 pesos. We already have the supporting framework in place, it looks fine without anything on top of it, it just doesn't stop any of the rain. we have checked into pricing for polycarbonate, roughly 15-20k for .8mm polycorrugated, we just would much prefer having glass than polycarbonate. the polycorrugate looks similar to corrugated metal roofing just made out of tinted polycarbonate. If anyone has any suggestions it would be most appreciated, i love the idea bryant has for the glass canopy, would be nice but doubtful it would cover the area needed for this project.

Hello Nomastequila,

3/8" thick glass will be enough for your requirement. One piece, 12 ft x 12 ft glass can be done but its very hard to install it will be needing around 8 manpower to lift & align this 300 kg, 3/8" thick glass. I would suggest to have a 3 piece glass, 4ft x 12 ft each, use a quality sealant like Dow Corning to bridge the gap and to have it water tight. This will reduced the cost from P106K to around P80K. Still not cheap....:D:D:D

I have not yet try using 1/4" glass on trellis. But if you have a foot apart spacing between your 2x4 tubular, I think it will not be a problem. Just make the glass tempered for safety.

HTH.

Re: Glass & Glazing Works

hmmmm... think we might have to move to another material, at least the glass places i have talked with have only been able to provide 4x8 foot lengths or 6x8 foot lengths, i could go six pieces of 4x6 but those price out at 6,500 each for 1/4" tempered. The trellis may need to be modified regardless, the 2x4 tubular is 2 beams based from the wall out over the terrace and down to the terrace. the beams are 3' apart, with 2x2 tubular beams between the 2x4 beams spaced at 12 inches. we want about 4 feet overhang on each side of the 2x4 tubular beams. i was checking other materials, found some 4x6 foot lengths of bronze acrylic at 2mm thickness for only 1.3k pesos each, would be easier to install this and easier to replace if damaged. Think this might have to be the direction we go and any support structure needed for the acrylic should be a simple aluminum type of framework. We really wanted glass but it seems out of the budget at this point in time. seeing the photo of that overhang glass gave me an idea though that maybe the glass could be suspended below the 2x4 beams with the cables running over the beams instead of into the wall. but i can't seem to find those sort of glass screw mounts that would be sturdy enough for the job. My concern on the acrylic is being only 2mm will that hold up or will i be replacing it every couple of months due to breakage etc...
