Well yes bro, Palochina will do as well provided this type of wood is properly protected by wood preservatives then soaked with waterproofing sealant since it will be exposed to the elements. Just remember, Palochina is considered as a soft wood.

What's nice about this wood is that they are available anywhere where you can buy them by the kilo or by bundle and in planks already.

Anyway bro good luck on your first project. Perhaps other members can give suggestions too on some good or cheap wood for your gate. 😉

Re: Good and affordable wood for Fence

Try searching this forum on epoxy. I've posted quite a number of threads about it for waterproofing.

It's the stuff boatbuilders use so you can't get any better.

It's just a little difficult to apply.

Ditto on Rosy's comment re softness of Palo China. If your fence won't be abused too much, palo china may work. Otherwise, you may see it chipping or scratched a lot. You may also want to consider second hand wood sold by shops that buy wood from demolished houses.

In both these case, watch out for embeded nails. Palo China comes usually from crates and may have embedded nails that the seller missed removing. That can ruin your saw or plane blade.

Some of us here use metal detectors and/or magnets to do a clean sweep of each 2nd hand plank.

Thanks for the tip about the embeded nails I'll keep that in mind.

If you want them to last longer than a year, I suggest skip palochina altogether.... It also attracts anay... Why not use bamboo instead, could be cheaper in the long run. But still you have to apply oil or finish on them but they will definitely last longer.

Hey Ralph, what else do you have in mind aside from Palochina, will Tanguile or Apitong work fine with you, they are not as soft as the former choice. Perhaps those 2" x 4" would work just fine and better long lasting than the Palochina provided again it is properly treated with Solignum clear and Phenoseal.

OK yung palochina since it will be lite and cheap. One of our high end residential projects used palochina on their gates coated with some kind of wood preserver.

Re: Good and affordable wood for Fence

Almost done sa mga power tools.

Question po regarding lumber.

Re: Good and affordable wood for Fence

One thing to consider in attaching the wood sa frame ng gate mo is how much weight can your existing gate carry. We had a project that the owner wanted to have wood attached to it for aesthetics, it so happened na the design of the frames was not able to withstand the extra load ng wood, he had to spent more to have the whole gate replaced then we installed the wood.

Re: Good and affordable wood for Fence

Its decided, we will go for the fiberglass ( yung nabibili sa Ace hardware) since mas mabilis ikabit and less maintenance. Sa tibay di ako sure kung tatagal. Next week baka finish na.

Post picture.

Re: Good and affordable wood for Fence

I ended up with polycarbonate for now.

I use my jigsaw and aluminum blade to cut.

I don't have prior experience cutting this board. All I can say is cutting with an aluminum blade is a breeze. After cutting I smooth the edge a bit with a file.

Re: Good and affordable wood for Fence

Did you cover the edge of the poycarbonate?

We have a polycarbonate shade in our Lanai and we learned painfully that you need to put an aluminum C- edging to cover it. Without this edging, our shade looked dirty after some time as dust tends to get inside the polycarbonate.
