I am about to install this roughly 3-kilo pendant light fixture and I'm worried that the plywood ceiling will not be able to support the weight? Will securing the mounting plate with large wood screws to a ceiling joist be enough? I think 1x2's were used in making the joists. Or do I have to reinforce it somehow? Thanks.

I would like to tell you that the 1x2's can take the load, but with wood quality nowadays, I would probably check first. 3 kilos isn't really a heavy load though, but best check first...

1x2 should be good enough but, as Timber says, wood quality should be good. A lot of contractors use the worst wood available for the ceiling because they're invisible.

Also critical are the joints. In my old house, there were no joinery and the lateral pieces were simply butt nailed to the joists. I guess the "pwede na" attitude prevails the most in hidden parts of construction.

When I had to install a rather heavy chandelier, I actually walked into/inside the ceiling (which fortunately had good clearance) and could sense that it was not built sturdy enough. I had to install L-brackets on the joints to improve structural strength. I can't remember clearly now but I recall having to install some iron hooks as well to hang the chandelier onto some of the support for the rafters/trusses.

On another room in the same house, I actually fell through the ceiling as one of the joints broke when I stepped on it. Luckily, only my pride was injured.

I recommend going inside the ceiling and inspecting first. But tread very lightly and be very careful. You will need a good flashlight and have an electric fan inside. Those places are unimaginably dark and hot.

sorry for the late reply guys. I just secured the fixture on one of the ceiling joists and it held it pretty well.
