Anybody knows how to make a bathroom niche & line it with tiles? I was thinking something like this:

Re: How to make a bathroom niche?

it should have been done in the beginning.

difficult if its found within the tub area.

relatively easier outside...

if its outside, make a double wall composed of marine plywood and 2x2s to make a recess...you can adhere tiles thereafter to the marine ply using tile adhesive. easier said than done.

i do not have the sane state of mind to recommend pure masonry works here and there.

Re: How to make a bathroom niche?

We did a renovation of a house last year and one of the additions was a niche like that in a wall of concrete. For a DIY project like that, i think its in the higher end of the difficulty scale but as with anything it can be done.

The first task is to carve out the niche in the wall. It took the masons some time to do this because it was all by hand. If you have a small hammer drill or jackhammer it would make it a lot quicker. Next is smoothing it out with mortar. Its also the time to put waterproofing. Sahra is usually mixed in with the mortar. Final step is the installation of the tiles and application of grout.

The steps are overly simplified so i suggest you read up more on each step and try to practice on maybe a shallow wooden box, specially the application of mortar and installation of tiles..

Good luck and dont forget WIP's!

Oh yeah..i suggest you try to find out if there are pipes buried in the wall...a burst pipe is not a good thing...
