Hi mga kabayan, magtatanong lng po sana ko regarding sa self-leveling epoxy paint:

1) Is it easy to apply? (can i do it on my own?)
2) How much would the cost be per sq.m.? (rough estimate)

I was thinking of using this type of paint finish for our new floor in our newly renovated home. Im still contemplating whether to use paint or homogeneous tiles, which in our country only a few variants lang ang available and ang mahal pa sobra. Will appreciate all your suggestions. Thanks in advance!

Hi Anino78, Welcome to PHM.

What brand are you referring to. It might be wise to refer to the labels and instructions on the can as every product might differ from the other.

Re: Is it easy to paint a self-leveling epoxy paint for the floor?

Thank you sir jarod. Actually nagrresearch ako online for self leveling paints sa pinas and so far davies pa lng ang nakikita ko na merong ganitong pintura. I checked boysen online and they dont carry this kind of paint. I'll be going back to manila this weekend for a short vacation para magcanvas ng mga materiales na gagamitin sa bahay namin. May ma-ssuggest po ba kyo besides davies? and is it available in mchome depot or wilcon? thank u very much po.

Actually Davies and Boysen naman ang pinaka-sikat and may customer service. I'm sure meron nung kahit sa mga privinces, check mo lang yung mga bigger hardware jan sa inyo. Alam ko may mga provincial outlets din ang Home Depot at Wilcon.

Quite a number of options for epoxy floor paint but first can you explain where you picked up, why you use the term 'self-leveling'? This is not a term often used in context of epoxy floor paint. Is there epoxy paint intended for floors that is not self-leveling? Or, in general, epoxy paint, or any kind of paint, that is not self-leveling?

Which specific Davies epoxy paint are you referring to that is self-leveling? Which Boysen epoxy paint or paints did you find that are not self-leveling?

Re: Is it easy to paint a self-leveling epoxy paint for the floor?

Hi, Anino.

I am presently working with epoxy resin on building a sailboat so my experience with epoxy is the resin type and not the leveling type you mentioned. But all epoxies come in two parts: A and B. You mix the two parts in a very specific proportion, usually by volume (some people do it by weight). The is some acceptable margin for error but not a lot and depends on the brand you use. The epoxy I use requires a ratio of 1:2 for parts A and B ( some people call these parts the resin and the hardener).

I use a plastic measuring cup for mixing because epoxy does not stick to many plastics so, when the leftover epoxy hardens on this cup, I just pull it off.

For very small batches (e.g. Touch-ups, spot gluing), I get one of those measure push-down lotion dispensers, one for each epoxy part, and push the required volume onto disposable ice cream cups.

Epoxy hardens rather quickly so you will need to mix only a small batch at a time that you will use. The epoxy I use gives me about 30minutes to work it before it becomes too sticky.

You will also need to clean your brushes immediately after use. If you don't, it'll be really hard and unusable. I use ordinary vinegar for cleaning brushes but the epoxy you use may recommend something else. Best to test first. When I apply epoxy in a large area, I use more than one brush and measuring cup. After finishing one batch of epoxy, I just leave the brush dunked in a cup of vinegar, mix a new batch of epoxy, then get a fresh brush.

Many people also develop a severe allergy to epoxy on repeated contact so I always wear long pants, long sleeved shirt, a cap/bonnet (you don't want any on your hair), and rubber gloves when working with epoxy. Be prepared to throw away your clothes when your project is down. I also have a spritzer containing vinegar handy for emergency cleanup.

Hope this bit of info helps. If you think you're up to this disciplined method, by all means, do it yourself!
