Looks like at least three bills have been recently proposed, but none have been passed yet. One in Senate (741, "Ban Asbestos Act of 2007") and two in House (479 and 896, both called "Ban Asbestos Act of 2010") now requiring consolidation. I don't know why there is so much duplicate work being done by the lawmakers.

Excerpt from one of the House bills, on the current situation:

In the Philippines, the current policy is one of control by regulation of the use and disposal of asbestos products. There is a ban on crocidolite or blue asbestos and amosite or brown asbestos, [COLOR="Red"]while the use of chrysolite or white asbestos is not banned which is permitted in high density products such as fire proofing, clothing, roofing felts or related products, asbestos cement roofing and flat sheet, friction materials, high temperature textile products, etc. While there is much room for improvement insofas as this policy itself is concerned, it is also noteworthy that [COLOR="Red"]the current regulations are either weak, poorly implemented, or both. Recent statistics show that [COLOR="Red"]Philippines is the fourth largest importer of asbestos at 76.32 million dollars per year.

I thought that all or most of the chrysotile (= white asbestos) like Eterton's Flexboard brand and others is coming from China, but apparently Canada is the culprit this time ... banning asbestos in their own country but exporting it to the Philippines:

Thanks for the tip. Was about to order some flexboard. Kaya pala it's 50 pesos cheaper than hardiflex per board. Asbestos is dangerous, especially considering that carpenters frequently use an angle grinder for cutting the cement boards, creating so much fine dust.

Mga sir, gypsum board ba dapat gamitin para hinde lumalabas yun mga dugtungan ng celing? Nag-renovate kasi kme ng bahay, ordinary plywood with flatwall enamel paint lang yun ceiling. Wala pang 1 month, lumabas na yun mga dugtungan ng plywood. Ano ba magandang masilya gamitin para di naman magkaroon ng mga cracks yun mga dugtungan ng plywood/board? Salamat

Bro, usually ceilings without insulation experience this kind of behavior due to the movement of the wood, pamakuan, there are movements, contractions due to excessive heat produces by the GI roofing More so at times even with insulation installed between the ceiling and the GI roof. Fiber cement doards or gypsum boards would be more recommendable in replace of ordinary plywood. They are fire retardant and repel termites.

Para sa dugtungan, you may apply some GAZA strips deep in adhesive or acrylic emulsion tapos itapal sa dugtungan, let dry completely then apply masilys or Plasolux putty thensand it to a fine finish, then paint finish to blend with the whole ceiling color. 😉

Im actually asking na lang for next time na magpagawa ako ng ceiling, kasi feeling ko kahit ulitin ko yun masilya at painting nun celing namen ngayon, lalabas lang ule yun dugtungan dahil wala nga insulation and ordinary plywood lang yun ginamit. But I am taking note of your advice. As in literally, with a pen and paper 🙂 Thanks

Btw, is Plasolux putty better than the most common wood masilyas they have in paint stores? (like Boral powder, Bosny wall putty and Polytuff)

Well bro, Boysen Plasolux putty, Bosny or Polytuff, these are great masilyas as well, its just that the problem of preparation of the joints ( dugtungan ) is the cause, I suppose due to the movement, contraction of the plywood, wood purlins and whatever, that is why gypsum boards or fiber cement boards are now recommended for ceilings. :thumbup: :rofl:

The use of ordinary plywood for ceiling materials ay sinauna pa. 😮 :p

why not try pvc flat panels which come in faux wood designs for ceiling?

drawback is the cost..around 3x the cost versus plywood ceiling...but very quick to install...putol lang ng putol...

if i am going to use plywood again, like JayL would recommend, the edges of the joint would have to be V-cut to get rid of seasonal movement of wood..at pwedeng wala ng masilya...imho.

ang cause ng problema kasi sa contracting edges ng plywood is the material where the plywood is anchored.

madaming nagpapagawa ng bahay nagtitipid sa pamakuan (battens) at gumagamit ng sundried or even lumber with unacceptable moisture content (wet)..kasi hindi naman daw makikita yung pamakuan..pero yun and dahilan ng widening gaps between plywood joints.

kahit nga kiln dried, nagco contract pa din..how much more kung sundried lang.

kaya i am very satisfied with the pvc panels...me groove in between planks...contraction is a thing of the past.

kahit polytuff, magco contract pa din at magka crack...kahit siguro epoxy, magka crack sa edges..

do not underestimate the power of plywood to contract...kahit na two directions yung 3 ply ng 1/4" plywood eh wood pa din yun...

kaya to put aesthetics, i also woudl recommend a chamfered edges of the plywood joint...medyo madiwara nga lang...pero pag nakahiga ka, yun ang makikita mo..yung cracks ng edges na tinipid mo..parang isang bangungot! hehehehe

Isang sinaunang diskarte sa mga joints nung plywood eh imbes na masilya ay lagyan ng "V" cut yung dugtong. Imbes na itago ay sadyang palabasin na dugtong talaga sya.

This way, there is nothing to crack as the solution is a "free moving" joint.

Pwede pa siguro gawin ng carpenter nyo ito para naman hindi kayo kunsumido tuwing mapapatingala kayo sa kisame.

Pwede na yan sir 4.5mm thickness for the bathroom innerwall. For waterproofing paint I use boysen plexibond since originally for roof sya, pag inapply mo sa bathroom mo effective din talaga.

I don't suggest it for firewall sir. Para sakin mas kailangan pa rin ang palitada for safety. For price i don't really know the difference pero Boysend is middle class naman so hindi sya masyadong mahal pero hindi rin mura.
