Re: Needs guidance: Home renovation

Updates: We started last Feb. 01, unfortunately, day 1 was spent waiting for the delivery of materials so we weren't able to do much. I have already completed the materials and am happy to find that I am "still" within budget. Inspite of purchasing additional items (data/comm lines as advised by sir balarila), the savings from the bargain doors paid for them.

Days 2 & 3 were spent installing the suspension ceiling frame. First problem was the suspension rods were longer than the space allowed (bet. the battens and C-channel) so we had to cut them shorter. Second was the workers were not too familiar with suspension ceiling installation. They treated the process like they were installing using wood kaya medyo mabagal. An advantage for me though just to make sure everything is "leveled" right.

Workers installing the wall angles on the perimeter

Laying out the double furrings

Suspension rods and C-channels in place

We'll be installing the Hardiflex boards today

@ LITE751,

UUUYYYY, may posted pics na si bro lite, salamat, salamat at maraming salamat bro for sharing !!!

I really would love to learn and see how these kind of ceiling materials are being installed kasi I have a 3 car garage space that I am planning to DIY installing a ceiling using metal furrings/tracks if that is how it is called, :p mahirap kasi kahoy, to expensive now a days plus maraming anay dito sa amin. 😮

So please do continue sharing pics and possibly if not asking too much a step by step captions or explanation of each process. Tututukan ko itong thread na ito until you finish your project bro.

Again maraming salamat !!! :thanks:

@Lite

2nd Floor ceiling ba yan? Don't forget to put roof insulation. Maliit kse ang clearance between the roof and ceiling for sure magiging mainit ang room mo during summer season.

Before installing the ceiling board double check kung may install ka pa sa loob ng ceiling like electrical wiring. You can put additional support (plywood) sa loob ng kisame, location ng pagkakabitan ng ilaw. Para pagkapitan ng screw when installing lighting fixtures. Screws don't hold much of Ficem or Gypsum Board.

Re: Needs guidance: Home renovation

@sir rosy, sorry I don't have step by step photos. I just followed the instruction from Jea-maxx's brochure. Here is the [COLOR="Red"]link.

As observed from my workers, ni-level muna nila yun perimeters using "tamsi" and hose leveller. Then they placed the wall angles along the perimeter using 1" concrete nails:

Then based from the brochure, they installed the suspension clips/rods, hooked the C-channels, placed the double-U clips then installed the double furring by clamping the double-U clips. We did not use the steel angles anymore since walang pagkakapitan (sa roof). We installed them on the battens instead.

For added support, they riveted the double furrings to the wall angles as well. Then ni-level uli yun furrings by adjusting the height of the suspension rods.

From my observation, using suspension ceilings are easier and more cost efficient than wood. Kaso lang nagco-complain yung workers, mas madali daw pag wood kasi pako lang ng pako, whereas dito drill ng drill then rivet pa, hahaha.

Re: Needs guidance: Home renovation

@sir bryant, yup we installed roof insulation as well. Roof to ceiling clearance seems around 8"-10" only. Hopefully it serves its purpose come summer time. We were also able to install the electrical wiring and data/comm lines beneath the ceiling.

Unfortunately, we did not install plywood to support lighting fixture mounting. Mabuti na lang we ran out of Hardiflex screws kanina (blessing in disguise), we can still install the plywood support by Monday. Buti na lang may PHM and mga masters to guide us noobs.:thanks:

How do I attach the plywood beneath the ficem board? Hardiflex screws din?

OT: NB ka din before sir? Familiar yung handle nyo.

Re: Needs guidance: Home renovation

@Lite

Yup I'm from NB too.

Some comment on the installation of insulation. Most practiced is it must be sandwich between C-purlin & roof. Im not sure how effective it is when just placed on the ceiling.

To remove the heat trapped inside the ceiling you need to install a ceiling vent on eaves (outside). "Cool Air In, Hot Air Out". You can use PVC ceiling vent few bucks only at home depot.

Yes it is cost effective, much easier & fire retardant. It is more fun installing metal frame ceiling & partition lalo na pag complete ang tools like ramset gun, depth stop screwdriver, good quality riveter & aviation snip.

Re: Needs guidance: Home renovation

@sir bryant, thanks for the tip regarding the roof insulation mounting. Unfortunately, attaching the insulation between the battens and roof seems impossible due to the way they were installed. We'll just adjust the height so that the air gap will be between the ceiling and the insulation.

When I first saw these PVC ceiling vents in Wilcon, I thought they were louvres for cabinets or window decors of some sort.:D I'll get a few tomorrow as well. Where is the best position for these? At the corners of the eaves, front and back?

Re: Needs guidance: Home renovation

installing insulation also requires good material and will serve its intended purpose.

what i used before is a 10mm double sided aluminum foil made by aerofoam...about 3500p/roll.

the electrical wires are cut too long as well. sayang naman.

Re: Needs guidance: Home renovation

Thanks sir violane. Unfortunately, I was only able to purchase the 5mm type. We checked kanina during noontime and early afternoon (hot weather in Calamba), so far the ceiling was kept cool. Just don't know come summer time, hoping it will still be effective.

The workers just finished the ceiling installation today. The longer wires are meant for the switches, I had them transferred near the doors. We are set to install the dry wall partitions tomorrow. Hopefully they finish the partitions by this weekend. 😉

Day 4: Completed installation of Hardiflex boards for the ceiling. Took us a longer time to optimize board usage to minimize waste.

Day 6: Completed installation of metal framing for the partitions for 2 small bedrooms.

Re: Needs guidance: Home renovation

Day 4: Completed installation of Hardiflex boards for the ceiling. Took us a longer time to optimize board coverage to minimize waste. Tape and putty to be applied this weekend.

Day 6: Completed installation of metal framing partitions for 2 small bedrooms. 1" concrete nails were used to attach the tracks and studs to the concrete floor and walls. Hardiflex screws were used to attach the tracks to the ceiling. Studs placed 24" apart were then put into place using rivets. Since I had spare studs, we also installed some in between the tracks for added support. We had to do improvised holes on the studs for the flexible hose.

Gypsum boards to be installed tomorrow.

Re: Needs guidance: Home renovation

Door jambs installed. Placed additional studs to support the door jambs. The door jambs were fastened into place using 1 1/4" black gypsum screws.

Test fitting of doors

Many thanks again masters for guiding me throughout the process. :thanks:

Re: Needs guidance: Home renovation

Thanks for the useful tips sir! I'll make provisions for these utilities while we set up the partitions. With regard to the alarm, I might as well go wireless should I still have enough budget left. My wife has her own "wish-list". I'm thinking of having her banned from depot stores so I could finish my project within budget. 😉

hehehe sir i can feel your excitement. I disagree though, let your wife jopin you in deciding and shopping kahit sa hardware... mas mahaba ang discussions but this will make the house more beautiful for her and for her to also have that feeling of ownership, hard labor and accomplishment. 🙂
