Re: Needs guidance: Home renovation

where did you get doors? i considered pvc doors but decided otherwise for esthetics and maintenance. i used hdf doors instead.
i plan to get factory jambs as well. i previously ordered some from a sashworks, may quality control issues din - fixing them took precious time.

Wouldn't gypsum be too soft/ brittle for use on walls? We usually use ficem for walls, gypsum for the ceiling. I have seen a doorknob punch thru a gypsum wall before.

Re: Needs guidance: Home renovation

@sir zepol, thanks for the tips. Regarding the doors, I got them by chance from one of the Tile Centers by the road side at Calamba, Laguna. They were on sale albeit some slight cosmetic damages that are easily repairable. Got the mahogany jambs from them as well, cost me P1000 a set, luckily, tuwid naman lahat so installation was not a problem (was supposed to get the HDF finger jointed door jambs from Wilcon at P900/set).

@sir moji, this is my dilemma as well. What might save me from this is that we don't have small kids in the house and I also plan to put the cabinets where the gypsum boards are so they aren't prone to accidental damages in the future. You hit the door knob scenario right on the spot.:thanks: As soon as the doors / knobs were installed; I thought of the door knobs punching through the boards so I placed floor mounted door stops. Hopefully these boards would serve us well.

@ lite751: Put a door stopper, floor mounted.

Yes a door stopper would work. You will still have to always be mindful of your walls when you start using your spaces. Of course, don't be mistaken as well that ficem is a really tough material, it will still dent when hit with sufficient force.

Re: Needs guidance: Home renovation

Hi again and good morning PHM! We are planning to redo the bathroom during the 2nd phase of renovation. We decided to stay away from the conventional ceramic tile design and plan to use deco stone tiles instead for a Bali-style inspired look. It's a relatively small bathroom so I guess I can allocate a bit of extra budget to make our bathroom non-traditional. Here is my concept:

I know cleaning and maintenance will be tough but I am willing to make the extra effort. However, I have a few questions that I would like to ask before I pursue this project:

1. Would the deco stone tiles need to be finished with a coating of some sort (varnish?) to minimize adhesion of soap stains and grime? I am also anticipating moss to develop overtime.
2. For the partition, I am planning to use metal framing and Hardiflex + glass blocks instead of concrete. Is Hardiflex waterproof enough and can it withstand the moisture? Can tile adhesive be used over Hardiflex or does it need to be primed first for the tile adhesive to adhere properly? Or would the concrete solution be more efficient?

Would appreciate your thoughts and inputs masters. Thanks in advance!

Re: Needs guidance: Home renovation

nice! sketchup i presume?

i think there are specific sealers for your material. as to tile over hardiflex, i haven't done it yet but it's done. i think the sequence is board->waterproof->adhesive->tile->grout

it's not specified but i'd at least prime the metal framing just in case moisture gets through.

as to cleaning, a pressure washer might come in handy.

Thanks sir for the advise, glad to know that it's doable. I'm using Sweet Home 3D, late ko na nalaman yun Google SketchUp, although I'd be trying SketchUp soon, I think it has better features.

What type is the waterproofing compound? Any particular brand? How do I prime the metal frames? Sorry, still in the learning process.

Re: Needs guidance: Home renovation

@lite
sweethome? i use that, *nix user ka ba? i found that package in the ubuntu repository, turns out there's a windows version as well.

there are lots and lots of waterproofing products. thoroseal's a popular but expensive choice. for cement or cement boards with no ponding i use mortarseal or thoroseal - so far so good naman. for the tiling under the floor you need a flexible membrane waterproofing. as well. lots of options there as well but so far thoroseal->flintkote->polymesh->flintkote->topping has seemed to work for me.

priming gi's tricky, but for that purpose anything will do since tago naman. if you use flintkote, you can use that. actually anything on hand will do since it's not exposed. the paint's just an added precaution naman.

however since you mentioned it, i use boysen primeguard to prime metal, especially gi. it's more expensive than the usual iron oxide primer but one can goes a long way, and it's waterbased. boysen makes a lot of promises about it so i gave it a try. time will tell.

Re: Needs guidance: Home renovation

@sir zepol, :thanks: again for your response. I appreciate the very detailed explanation. Will visit Wilcon this weekend to canvas for materials and check if this project will be (or should be) within our budget.

I just found Sweet Home 3D in one of my google searches, been using the Windows version ever since. What I don't like about it is the limited textures, landscapes and materials available in its library. I had to import images and some 3D files so I can create my design to our liking. I am also having difficulty using the lighting effects vs. the time of day when creating photos. It either gets too dark or too shiny, still experimenting on the best settings. 😀

Google Sketch Up looks better. Saw some samples and I think the rendering is better plus the availability of more plug-ins that I can use in my design. I'll find time to play around with this soon, hopefully it is as easy to use as Sweet Home 3D.:thanks:

Re: Needs guidance: Home renovation

it seems sketchup's much more capable. but sweethome's easier to use.

i mainly use it for floor plans, planning partition walls, and estimating for drywall, flooring, and paint. i've learned the hard way to do the sums myself and not rely on others. kahit kasi well meaning yung tao, minsan math impaired.
