Since many of us are fond of wood making. I would like to introduce to you Boysen products that will accentuate (naks!) the natural finish of wood.

First is varnishing. For varnishing wooden surfaces like cabinets and walls here is the recommended procedure:

Surface Preparation:
1. Make sure wooden surface is dry.
2. If wooden surface is stained, seal the stain first with any of the following: Sanding Sealer, Silver Finish Aluminum or Acrytex Primer.
3. Countersink nailheads and apply Plasolux glazing Putty to avoid contact with moisture and cause rust.
4. Remove dust from wooden surface.
5. If you want to level the color of the wooden planks, you can bleach it by using Nation Wood Bleach 1& 2. Caution:First apply Wood Bleach 1 then after 15 minutes apply Wood Bleach 2. Don't apply immediately because this may cause fire. Likewise, designate a separate storage area for both bleaches bec. of its flammable property
6. When the bleach dries up you can start varnishing.

Painting Application:
1st Coat: Oil Wood Stain
2nd Coat: Sanding Sealer
3rd Coat: either one of the following: Clear Gloss Lacquer, Waterwhite Lacquer or Dead Flat Lacquer

I hope this has helped you in your varnishing.

How much time should you wait after applying stain for the sanding sealer to adhere properly? I understand that boysen sanding sealer is lacquer based right?

Yes you can. If you still want to see the grains of the wood then you first apply stain then sealer. If you prefer not much of the grains will be seen then sealer first afterwards stain.

After staining, you need to wipe once along the grain to remove excess stain from the wood. Recoating interval is 5-8 hours. Allow overnight drying before applying sanding sealer.

You are right. Sanding sealer is lacquer based.

Hi! There are more tips to every step but some tips will come from experience. Most of the things that I've shared are theoretical point of view of painting. An experieced painter can really teach more to us.

Apparently, the theoretical aspect of paints like its chemistry, how to use Boysen products, the right surface preparation and some common problems in painting will be discussed.

Hi Cris,
Would the same steps apply if i plan to use lacquer based stains with Boysen sealers? Would there be some long term difference or effects on wood surfaces? TIA

Hi sir! With regards to compatibility of lacquer based stains with the sanding sealer, I don't know for sure what the effect will be. We can test the compatibility of the brand of lacquer stain you have and our sanding sealer. Eventhough both are lacquer based, we still can't easily say that they are compatible.
