Hello Master Home builders and Guru's
I came about this link about Polystyrene Blocks. are they expensive? pros vs cons with installation?
are these available on our local market?
thanks!
newbie here
Re: Polystyrene Blocks substitute for hollow blocks?

I think these could be a quick install.. but i haven't seen some of them in local markets... only those insulation boards...
this could be lighter and reusable than hollow blocks...
Re: Polystyrene Blocks substitute for hollow blocks?
One client of mine used this for interior partitions. Very sturdy parang hollow blocks din. Even sa flooring ng attic nila Ito din yun ginamit. Lightweight and easy to use. Sabi nun contractor mga malls daw Ito na ginagamit for the external walls, totoo kay a?

Re: Polystyrene Blocks substitute for hollow blocks?
I think you should google search it sa internet to get more info on these building materials, this is not very common locally, or maybe on special orders lang, we are more dependent on locally made hollow blocks. Maybe the big malls uses them but from the videos I have seen it is more for ground or flooring insulation and concrete foundations.
This building material still needs to be researched for local consumption !!!;)
Some pics to make us understand more about this building/construction material. Very similar to STYROFOAM ?

Re: Polystyrene Blocks substitute for hollow blocks?
Yes bro rosy it's similar to styros. 2" thick sya sandwich between metal screens and then saka iplaplaster ng 1"cement on both sides. Good for sound and thermal insulation and light weight pa. Very similar yun principle Kay vazbuilt but this one uses polysty. I think this is way better than cardboard houses sa USA lol I'll try to get a picture next time.

Re: Polystyrene Blocks substitute for hollow blocks?
@ ricky
so it's 2" thick, and with 1" palitada the resulting wall is 4" all in all? ok din where space is really at a premium.
also, minsan matagal mag plaster. there's this option of skipping the plaster, and instead installing furring strips and gypsum board. polystyrene's attractive for this purpose since i'm assuming that unlike chb, it's naturally waterproof.
tanong lang, is it as easy to cut to size as chb? also how's the pricing? chb's so cheap - some hardware stores don't even secure them, they just stack em outside.

Yes sir zepol tama si antontan na panel sya and not blocks. The one I saw uninstalled is like around 1mx1m but I doubt if it's the orig size.

Re: Polystyrene Blocks substitute for hollow blocks?
Several years ago, a real estate agent told me that the McDo inside Eastwood was done that way. Polystyrene panels sandwiched in steel matting then blasted with shotcrete. I was told it is lighter and stronger than the usual CHB method and a lot faster to apply. Not aware of costs, though.
We use shotcreting in some of our projects that require slope stabilization. In one project where we cut a slope and was left with a much steeper slope, we applied 1meter soil nails (imagine iron rods punched into the soil) then attached the exposed end of the soil nail into a blanket of steel matting, then blasted the whole setup with concrete (shotcreting). If I remember right, the concrete was upwards of 4000psi.
My point about describing shotcrete is that the mortaring methodology for polystyrene embedding is available and commonly used locally, albeit, AFAIK, for industrial applications.

Re: Polystyrene Blocks substitute for hollow blocks?
ok, far from an expert here, but i saw this being installed a few years ago on a tv show. or something similar, they stack them up, and fill the inside with concrete, didn't see them blast the outside with plaster or anything. Remembering back maybe they installed gypsum board to the interior i dont know. I am sure its a great insulator and filled with concrete it would be quite stable. Not shotcreting would allow for channels to be routered out for electrical runs and piping installations. but again i am far from an expert, just passing on what i have seen. If i remember the show correctly it was dirty jobs or something similar on discovery channel if that gives any credence to what i am saying.
Re: Polystyrene Blocks substitute for hollow blocks?
Eto pala yung mga nakikita ko sa construction sites na styro na may wire mesh. This is interesting. Has anyone tried using this? Mukhang ok kasi high thermal and noise insulation dAw based sa website. Mas mura b ito kesa traditional na hollow blocks.
