Some couple of years back the house commander (swmbo) demanded that I start thinking of replacing our kitchen door since it looks so awful already and is falling apart due to wood borer infestations (bukbok). Yes sir or yes mum as I responded without much thinking and off I went and purchased a Matimco brand door in a hardware store near us selling this brand.

When I got the door panel I started to sand the entire bare surface with different grits of sandpaper to a very smooth and fine finish up to its minute detail design. So to make sure there will be no wood borer infestations in the future, I then brush the entire panel with three coats of Solignum clear solution (an anti anay/bukbok) wood preservative, in other words linason ko muna and wood panel. After a few days of drying, I started working on it by applying sanding sealer on the entire surface and after drying, started applying several coats of ZAR brand wood oil stain plus improved the look of the panel by putting some faux wood grain on the square designs in the middle.

To cut the story short, its been more or less three years and I have not yet installed or finished the door, it is still un varnished and just standing in our kitchen annex awaiting to be worked again and finally be installed. Asked some friends for tips and advice in the last EB/swap, particularly bro jon and violaine, for the remaining steps to be taken to finally finish the kitchen door panel and it to be installed. Thank you brothers for the support.

When swmbo learned of this development she was so happy and said "HAAAAYYYY Salamat naman at nabigyan ng pansin ang kitchen door KO. Note of the capital "KO" (mine), LOL.

I would like to share some pics on what I did with the door panel though I started work on it a few years back when I was not yet a member of the PHM community, so pics are very limited/few. Since I have now the confirmed neccessary steps to finish this door, then I'll be starting to work on it again and finally have it installed by me and make swmbo happy. :foryou:

These pics are the present state or condition of the kitchen door, ya swmbo is right, it looks so awfull and ugly plus the signs of bukbok infestation are very evident.

Re: ROSY's kitchen door replacement project

The wood stains I used plus the very simple gadget to make the faux wood grains on the center wood paneling.

The three brands of final varnish or top coat I plan to use. WOULD LIKE SOME TIPS OR ADVICE HERE, on what brand would be the best to use. I was thinking of using the Sadolin brand as its final coat coz this door is constantly exposed to the elements like the morning sun and water during stormy months. ANY CONVINCING SUGGESTION GUYS ??

And this is my hole saws which I will use to install the door handle and locks.

In the coming days, I'll follow this up with my progress and show pics also of its final result and its installation. THANKS in advance for your convincing suggestions or comments on this door project.

Re: ROSY's kitchen door replacement project

Bro joey81,

Well hopefully maybe Feb or Mar, pag sure wala ng ulan plus like I told you I will still have to fabricate an ornamental stainless screen door to protect it from the rains and dog scratches. 😮

Sayang kasi yung ganda ng pinto kung masisira lang ng aso. LOL :D:p:D

That kitchen door gets soaked in rain during typhoon season plus also exposed to the morning light daily since its facing the East.

Re: ROSY's kitchen door replacement project

faux wood grains pala tawag dun tsaka dun pala ginagamit yung rubber pattern na yun... thanks for the info! Parang niroroll lang po ba yun? Kailangan pa ba idillute yung wood stain before using? thanks!

Re: ROSY's kitchen door replacement project

HI archie013,

Yeah its a fake wood grain that can be done on plain wood or metal sheets or door. No need to dilute the wood stain but it needs to be well stirred in the can, then apply it by brush on the surface, oh the surface have to be flat or on the horizontal position, if not the stain will just drip down. 😮

Then you position the wood grain applicator on the surface then drag it towards you slowly but as you drag the rubber, you will also roll it towards you. You will not be able to get the effects you prefer immediately, you will have to do some practice application on scrap wood surface several times till you you get to control some wrist movement and be comfortable with it. If first try turns out ugly, re apply again some wood stain and start all over, again and again till you get the effect you desire. 😉 🙂

Re: ROSY's kitchen door replacement project

hi rosy!

thanks for the info. all the while - I thought you dip the applicator in the stain/paint and drag it across it. I hope to give this tool a try soon. It adds that textured look and elegance to an otherwise plain surface. If the first try is ugly - how to you cover up the mistake? could you just wipe away the stain before it dries out? 🙂

Re: ROSY's kitchen door replacement project

This video could be a very big help to our fellow DIYers wanting to improve the looks of their door/s, new or old. I have done this technique as you can see in the pics of door I have posted. Its just that I cannot show you how it was done but here it is, just sharing the video so you will know how it is done. Enjoy watching and learn from it !! It will only need some practice and I know you'll get it right in one way or another. :play_ball:

GOOD LUCK .......... 😉 🙂

bro, do you know where to get the materials for the screen door (frame, rubber seals, etc)? i'm targetting this as my next project. personally i'd go for anoloc as it will blend with the color that i currently have.

I would go for that Sadolin Yacht. I have a number of cans of that reserved as top coating for my boat. I know of a number of local boatbuilders who use it, too. Good durability and UV protection. Just check if it will stick to your stains. I have no experience of topping Zar oil stains with Sadolin Yacht. I would bet it's OK but it's always good to test.

A lot of boatbuilders test by sticking duct tape on a fully cured surface then pulling it off abruptly. If some of the coating comes off, bad adhesion.
