I am trying to get some info on skim coating. My carpenter suggested i use this instead of the
finished layer of cement to save time and money on my interior walls, also he said no need to neutralize or prime the walls just paint after all is dry and sanded.Where can i find this product in Cebu and at what cost...(powder form)

Re: Skim Coating

It's good. I had used it to my previous project. it's similar to gypsum compound.. made in Cebu by Treasure island. Here's the link http://www.islandpaints.com/island/products.php?c=16&pid=60

Re: Skim Coating

Interesting.

Does it take the place of final palitada or primer?

Re: Skim Coating

Bro I saw some tutorial videos of this type of applications sa You Tube, its very similar to applying plaster or palitada on walls, only in very thin quantity, similar too sa masilya but using a different plastering compound.

Here is a starting link but there are other videos as well posted by VideoJoeKnows. 😉

Re: Skim Coating

Salamat, Rosy.

This should come in handy. Seems like a more efficient way of final plastering.

Kumusta na, Bro. Long time na!

Re: Skim Coating

It will depends on the application.

If you have existing rough concrete wall with "palitada" but rough finish and you want to make it smooth. Best way is too use skimcoat. You can apply 1-3mm thick plaster smooth finish. Makapit yun skimcoat at hindi nagkakaroon ng crack. Unlike ordinary cement which is prone to crack.

For John3150 case, I think naka plaster na yun chb wall pero rough finished. The cheapest way is to use skimcoat. No need to neutralized after skimcoating but you need to primer the wall before painting. Unless you will be using self-priming paint.

We're also using skimcoat sa underside ng concrete slab and beams to repair minor imperfection. Normally after removing forms ng concrete slab and beams makinis na yun surface ng concrete.

For plastering of new chb wall we prefer to used quality sand and "cemex palitada king". Quality is much differ from ordinary cement. Less cracking. During plastering kailangan mo kse habulin yun straightness ng wall, 1/2"- 1" thick wall plaster will do. Then yun mga minor imperfection ng wall skimcoat ang gamit. Kung gagamitan mo ng skimcoat the whole plastering procedure mas expensive.

A regular skimcoat (2-5mm), 25 kgs - cost around P290/bag
Fine skimcoat (1-3mm), 25 kgs - cost around 400-490/bag, depending on the brand
Available color is gray & white, white skimcoat is more expensive.

Re: Skim Coating

Hey bro bryant,

First of all thanks for the info on its usage and for the prices of the regular and fine skimcoat.
Now what I want to know is where are this skim coat compound available, available ba sya sa ordinary hardware stores or sa mga known home depots only like WILCON, FEDERAL or ORTIGAS Home Depots. Interested din kasi ako, I guess I will DIY skimcoat some rough plastered walls in my son's room.

Plus, what's usually the brand do you buy/use ? :soccer:

Thanks in advance bro !! :thanks: 😉

Re: Skim Coating

its available sa wilcom and other home depots, look for Zemcoat, then you have the choice between 2 bags, its about the thickness of the plastering that you are planning to use. it will be in mm

This is very informative. Sir, for plastering new chb. which is cheaper 1st rough finish then use 2 coats skim coat? or use pure cement then one coat skim coat?

Re: Skim Coating

For new chb, plastering then straight to finishing using pure cement para makinis. Used cemex palitada king or lafarge wallmaster. Don't leave naka rough finished yun wall then the next day i-finish ng cement. Hindi po maganda kapit ng cement.

Type N masonry cement like Palidata King & Lafarge wallmaster is much cheaper than skimcoat. P215-P220/ bags (40kg) of cement vs. P290/(25kg) bag of skim coat.

For my ongoing project I will be using Lafarge Wallmaster its a Type N Masonry Cement intended for Plastering (palitada), chb laying & filling (asintada at palaman).

Before I was using Cemex Palitada King but I'm having a hard time looking for a hardware near my area who can supply me. That's why I switched to Lafarge new product "Wallmaster".

Why to use Wallmaster vs ordinary cement.
FEATURES BENEFITS
Micro-fillers fill in voids and pores---------> Ultra-smooth finish

Lighter and stickier plaster----------------> Ease of use, faster works

Regulates hydration and drying---------> Minimizes cracking due to shrinkage

Cost: Lafarge Wallmaster ---->P215
Ordinary Cement-------->P218-220
Savings:-------------------->P3-5/bag + the benefits of wallmaster

Take note that Lafarge Wallmaster & Cemex Palitada King is for plastering & chb laying only. Not for concrete beams, columns, slab and footing.

Re: Skim Coating

There are some skim coat products in bag packaging (powder) that has a problem on painting process. Poor adhesion of primer paint to skim coat. Problem occurs few months after painting.

One of the leading paint manufacturer suggested me to used their own skimcoat product.
