Need your advice regarding outdoor stair railing.

Hindi nila sinasabi if 202 or 304

Because of budget na rin naiisip ko na lang mag steel. kami na lang ng friend ko mag welding:D
Mahirap po ba ang maintenance ng steel?
Tumatagal po ba ang tubular steel pag outdoor?

TIA

Re: Stainless or Steel railing

In a private residential context:
A good marine epoxy primer and several coats of a good enamel paint
will keep your MS in great shape for many years. Even if you factor in
stripping/repainting costs every several years, MS will still cost less than
SS. Kahit outdoors pa siya, with a good finish, it's contact-wear, rather
than exposure to rain that will cause sustainability/corrosion concerns:
only with the finish compromised can moisture do its dirty work. With
exposure to strong sunlight your finish color admittedly will fade within
1-3 years, though.

In high-traffic/commercial context, the need to refinish painted MS is
a more frequent concern (said finish being worn down faster by high
traffic), with both material and labor costs piling up each time, and the
lower-maintenance charm of SS shines brightly.

Re: Stainless or Steel railing

Will the railings be used for a private residential home, perhaps yours ???

Let me start with square or rectangular BI tubings. I have seen others use this because its cheap and varies in sizes in term of dimensions and its light. After installation, it is immediately cleaned of rust then painted with several coats of steel primer epoxy, then the desired top coat finish. Problem with this material is that they rust easily specially inside where welds have been applied and you may be doing repairs sooner than you think specially when it is placed out in the open.

With GI pipes, specially the thicker gauges/schedules will do just fine, it will last longer and does not rust immediately even without a steel primer epoxy coating but of course I'll still coat it with the primer then the additional desired finish coating if it is installed in the open. This is a bit expensive than the BI tubing/pipes and a bit heavy but that's ok, what's important is when welded and coated properly, you won't have a problem repairing it for a long long time. Baka yung finished coating lang ang gusto mong palitan. 😉

With stainless steel pipings or tubings, well we all know naman it will be the best material, only yes it is very very expensive 😮 but sure using this for railings will make a residential house look good and flashy in terms of aesthetics considering the fact if the railing are well designed.
Using SS will require less maintenance if non at all, you just have to wipe the surface with "GLO" or spray some Pledge to keep it new and shiny.

Try to avoid using the first material, still not worth it and it will give you problems sooner than you expected. 🙁

Hope this helps and good luck on your project.

Re: Stainless or Steel railing

Sir Horge and Rosy

Thank you for the very informative suggestions. I will go for SS, save up and find a good fabricator 🙂
Last week we made an indoor stair railing for the 2nd floor of our house. Hahaha guilty on the BI square tubes. Spent almost 2.5k for a railing using 2x2 and 1x1 BIs for handrails/baluster. Ang mura.. sana lang wag ako mapamura next year 🙂

Re: Stainless or Steel railing

@ chadrix,

Brad its not really that bad naman pala , you installed it pala inside the house so I guess the materials you used will last you long. Just watch out for any signs of rusting on the joints, if you see some paint peeling or "bulutong" immediately address the upcoming problem. 😉

Hey there again bro chadrix, what is perfect in this world, perfection is just in the eyes of the beholder in terms of aesthetics. Like what I said, since you installed your stair railings inside your house, then I guess there is nothing to worry about, its not exposed to the harsh elements outside like rain or strong winds and heavy traffic etc, your railings will do just fine, simply coat it or finish it with your desired top coat paint, it will look great and beautiful na at " hindi ka na mapapamura " next year or maybe 10 years from now, hahahaha, LOL

Bro with regards to your picture above, well looking at it, your railing in mind will for sure be exposed to the elements so its gonna be a choice between GI pipes or Stainless steel tubings, I will not discuss anymore pricing/costings aspects, you know that already. Are you fixed on that choice because you can opt for concrete railings or some beautifully designed ceramic balusters. Just a suggestion or an option kasi ito sigurado walang kalawang and this might end up cheaper in the long run.

Thanks for posting some pics, at least you where able to show where you have installed and intended to install your railings.

Again good luck on the project !!! :cheerleader:

Re: Stainless or Steel railing

haha i received a lot of negative inputs after showing the picture of the outside stairs last week to a feng shui master. Advice was either change the door position , place a 2nd door , or make a zigzag design on the steps and paint the rails red 🙁

Re: Stainless or Steel railing

ingat at enjoy your project sir.

Or you can get the opinion of another Feng Shui master to check if they have the same advice before you reconfigure your build.:D:work:

Re: Stainless or Steel railing

Stairs thats leading straight into a door has usually been a no-no in feng shui. Also, your stairs seems to be pretty steep, or is it just the camera angle?

Dumb mistakes will always be dumb mistakes, unless . . . . you learn from it, and then it will be learning experience.
