hello guys, I woud like to ask why is it that houses built nowadays rely on steel truss roofing, I don't see wood being used. Is it really the trend today or it depends upon the contractor, owner or the design of the house. I plan to do a total renovation of our house and add a second floor making it an A-house type. What's better to use as roofing, well, taking into account the cost & durability.

Its basically cost effectiveness. Steel is still more expensive than wood, but the ease in fabrication and durability is tops. In wood trusses, one bad termite infestation is all it takes to ruin your house. So for your application, steel is recommended. HTH!

Yeah your right, termites would be a real problem. What would be your rough estimate regarding the cost of having steel truss, would it be, say, 50% more expensive than wood truss? given the same area...

I was told that steel actually costs less.

It is said to be cheaper than wood because of its cost effectiveness, in other words it will be worth it in the long run. In big areas like warehouses and storage facility it is definitely cheaper than wood but for small houses, wood is still cheaper.
