I have built a small house near the sea in Phils. The house is almost totally "Ipil" exterior (walls, verandah, posts), which is now seasoned after 1 year.
I am looking for a recommendation for a coating to put over the timber to protect it from the elements, pests, and keep it from going grey. I will leave the timber natural - not painted
I understand Ipil is not so susceptible to termites etc, (is this correct?)
I know solignum is used to keep pests away - but is it useful for Ipil, and would it help preserve?
I am looking for timber protection - but in Phils I do not know what products are available and what is best.
Any assistance would be very much appreciated. Thank you
Re: Timber preservative
HI there jackaiz,
That's so great you have built a wooden house near or along a beach perhaps, ok here is my say regarding the kind of wood you used for your house, first of all what kind of ipil did you used, is it the giant ipil that the former first lady Imelda Marcos promoted during their reign or the local ipil that is hard to come by nowadays and this kind takes time to grow before it can be used for logs or furnitures. This kind of ipil is really hard.
Here in my place I have plenty of ipil trees that I use for firewood and if left on the ground those chopped pieces, in a short time termites would love to feast on the wood, so that means this kind of wood is so susceptible to termites . 😮 Yes Solignum will do to protect the wood from pests. I have used them, the brown and the clear kind. Now if you prefer the natural timber color, you can use the Solignum clear. Others would not recommend this product maybe because of its strong chemical smell/odor specially the brown type.
There is another brand that can be used too, brand is PHENOSEAL, its another alternative for wood protection, actually its for concrete and masonry too. Here's what it says for wood, it helps prevent splitting, staining, checking or warping., protects also wood against damage due to moisture penetration plus helps maintain true wood color and grain hence extending wood surface life. OH this one is odorless, non toxic and non flammable. 😉 May I recommend too after applying the clear wood preservatives, let is dry properly then apply some gloss varnish on the wood .
These products can be purchased at ACE HARDWARES or at HANDYMAN stores near you. :p
HOPE this helps !! 😀
By the way sir, are you a foreigner living in the PHILIPPINES ?
