I just got out of prison. 🙂

Just this morning the door knob of our computer room broke and I got trapped inside.

Got my son to help me bust out of prison. He got the basic tools from the shop and put them in a plastic bag

Got the knob out, but the bolt still won't budge

Re: Trapped!

So I Got the bigger gun

Good thing its got a blade for metal

Problem is its 120V, and 3kW stepdown is too heavy to be pulled up the window

Good thing the house is wired to ground

Re: Trapped!

Moved one wire to ground

Now I have 110V!

Bosch MX25EC-21 in action

Already at full depth but still there is about 1/8 of an inch of the bolt remaining

Re: Trapped!

A couple of kicks from the outside and FREEEDOOOOM!!!!

Mabuhay ang BOSCH!!

Now I have to address the root cause before I install a new knob. This cheap door is already sagging

It sagged so much that you have to raise the door (by the knob, of course) for the latch to catch.

I think the upward force on the knob caused it to fail over time.

Meralco requires that your fusebox is connected to their ground and also to an 8-foot copper stake driven into the ground. All my outlets have a 3rd wire connected to this ground.

The voltage between the two live wires is 220V. The voltage between the ground wire and any one of the live wire is 110V. A long time ago (as in 3 decades) we had a 110V motor driving our deepwell pump. One wire was connected to live and the other side was connected to the GI pipe of the deepwell.

I don't know if this is an unsafe practice or not. So I'm not advocating it. I only used it for this emergency. I've rewired the extension cord back to 220V configuration.

Very resourceful prison break! lol

30 to 45 minutes I think. Most of it waiting for my son to find my tools. 😀

Dito sa Pampanga, for those covered by PELCO 1, one line is already ground and it gives 220volts. Dun naman sa covered ng SFELAPCO, ground to 1 line is 50volts while the other line to ground is 170 volts.

The best way is kung meron ka multitester to see the actual voltage given by 1 line and ground.

@joey, Sir saan ba kayo located/power company at ganyan ang power ninyo?

Re: Trapped!

We're on the eastern edge of Metro Manila. Serviced by Meralco.

Hmnnn... If you have 220-0, then I don't see why I can't use 110-0.

Re: Trapped!

My 02 cents thought.

It was an emergency. The juice to power up the tool and go through it was made available by rigging the outlet setup. Perfect for the situation.

Personally I would not run my 110V power tools on that setup on a long term basis.

Provided my supply line would be ~110V - 0 - ~110V then I won't be running the 110V - 0 line to power my tools unless I get a Meralco provided messenger wire ( ground ).

Saludo ako sa McGyver spirit mo Sir!

We have 220-0 while yours, as Sir JayL mentioned, is presumably 110 - 0 - 110. In our case one line used in combination to ground will give 220volts while the other line combined with ground will produce 0 volts.

My point was that certain localities supply their power in different ways. Readers of this thread should check their own ahead of time before trying such a brave "mod" as you did.

As to the messenger wire mentioned by Sir JayL, in olden times SFELAPCO did provide one and it was used to get 110volts using either line in combination with the messenger wire.

Nowadays, dahil siguro gastos lang sa kanila, hindi na.

.

I totally missed your point. And thank you for making sure it got across for the benefit of readers. I had previous knowledge that we have 110-0-110 in our house. i measured it with a volt-meter maybe a year ago. Even tried running the Bosch GTS1031 table saw on the 110-0.

so, if meralco supplies a 3 wire line, does that mean the house falls under 110-0-110?

Using a volt meter, a very useful and not so expensive tool for the DIYer, like the way Sir Joey did, will safeguard your precious tools.

A very good recommendation, if you don't have a tester and don't want to buy one, try to borrow from your friend.
Voltage will differ from location to location even with the same supplier.
