Turbine Vents

The rainy season is here, but it's only a matter of months before it gets warm in our country again. I've been thinking of getting some turbine vents (i don't know what they're called locally, but they're those spinning things that look like chef's hats found on the roofs of some buildings) installed, but don't know anyone who's had any experience with them. I remember discussing them with my dad a long time ago, and he said that apart from them being unsightly, they can be an entry point for undesirables (animal or man). Does anyone here have any experience with vent turbines? TIA!

Re: Turbine Vents

Wind Turbine Ventilators are very effective in terms of either heat or moisture. During hot days it helps release the trapped hot air in your roof. On colder and moist days it can help release excess moisture in your roof. Unsightly...yes...very unsightly.

Re: Turbine Vents

I guess this is a house you want to use one on since aesthetics matter. A prof of mine put one on his house and was bragging that it brought his ceiling temp down 5 degrees. If aesthetics are a big deal, then how about enclosing it in a nice "bell tower" housing of sorts ... this is just off the top of my head so don't shoot me if you don't like the idea. As for the threat of leaks, I might suggest you put a catch pan underneath the opening with a drainpipe to the roof's edge (sorry I don't know the term - the ceiling of the roof's overhang).
