been looking through the net for ideas and concepts on how to go about this project - a ton of pictures indeed.

to give an idea, the stair is poured concrete and the floor is finished with granite.

"however," the sample projects are all based on wood. as much as possible i would like to use minimal wood - perhaps just the finishing (front). my idea is to use aluminum extrusions similar to those used in sliding windows, screen doors, etc as the internal framework where drawer slides will attach to. essentially this will be a set of vertical and horizontal alum bars spaced correctly.

as for fixing the 'framework' in place, i'm thinking of screwing it directly to the floor (granite). for securing the top, i'm thinkig of 1 - using angled aluminum to fix it under the stairs, or 2 - chipping part of the stairs and burying it by an inch, securing it with cement or tile adhesive.

the actual shoe rack will be made of aluminum tubings sandwiched between square bars of aluminum.

you might ask why aluminum: i don't have to finish it (paint), i don't have to maintain it. but i have to admit the cutting part and fixing part will be harder than using wood.

thoughts/ideas?
