i would like to use wind power (instead of solar power) to power some of our perimeter lights at home. do you think this is more feasible than using solar panels? kahit umulan/bumagyo, meron wind, typically wala naman sunlight kapag may bagyo. kahit din sa gabi, meron hangin. i've seen DIY wind turbines in youtube using ceiling fans. i wonder if that can be really used to power anything. do you know of any residential units using/harnessing power from a wind turbine? any good company you can recommend?

Re: wind turbine (wind power)

You have to have an accurate data of average wind velocity in your area before considering installing a wind turbine. Some wind turbinew have a minimum air velocity requirement of 2.3m/s, others even higher at around 3m/s. It has an overspeed protection during high winds to you will not like to produce power during a typhoon where the wind velocity exceeds 10 to 12m/s. Also the mast should be high enough to lessen the wind interference due to some obstructions such tall man-made structures & trees. I have seen few installations of hybrid solar/wind street lightings in remote areas of Palawan going to underground river, and 120+ units installed along the road leading to Misibis Bay Resort in Albay. The first cost will not be cheap so the recovery time will largely depend on the average wind speed. You may google some local small scale distributors. Here is one them: http://www.swepinc.com/products_turbines.php . HTH

Using solar panels is great way of achieving residential power needs.. It is cheaper and clean way of generating electricity
