Anyone here knows a good supplier of apple glass ?

These are colored (usually green, blue, yellow & white) glasses used for decorative items like lamp shades, window furnishings, etc ...... usually used to add an antique look to the item.

Thanks in advance guys.

Re: Apple Glass ?

Do you mean so-called "manzanita" glass?
'Manzanita' is one of the local terms for traditional flora-pattern glass.
Here's flora-pattern glass in various colors:

Any respectable aluminum/glass shop can order it for you.
In 2012, I had a shop in QC order it from another in Manila, IIRC near Arranque Market.
Print out an image of the glass pattern you want and bring it to your local shop, then ask
if they can order it in the colors you need (and for how much).

*Although the Spanish term 'manzanita' can be treated as a diminutive of 'manzana' or apple (Malus spp.), the true
etymology of the glass pattern's name seems to lie in the unrelated manzanita bush (Arctostaphylos spp.), whose
ovoid leaves and buds lend easily to a classical graphic rendition as a quatrefoil-and-pellet design.

Re: Apple Glass ?

Thanks @horge ....... though similar, this manzanita glass is different from the so-called apple glass.

Thanks.

Re: Apple Glass ?

@ mike,

May be you are talking of "Stained Glass" eto yun mga colored glass na ginagamit sa simbahan. Actually hindi siya glass. If im not mistaken polymer resin ang ginagamit nila.

You can check . http://www.krautartglass.com/

@bryant ...... you're right bro, it's not actually the traditional glass material - though it breaks just as easily.

anyways, this apple-glass is for a small project of mine ...... a 30cm x 180cm rectangular hole in the wall, beside my main door. nagpagawa ako nang wooden frame to hold 4 pieces of the apple glass. this should look nice once finished.

@horge ...... having finally opened your manzanita photos on my desktop PC, it does look like the "apple glass" that I know ..... a wide monitor makes a whole lot of difference versus a tablet screen. thanks.

If you want additional reference images, I would repeat that
that what is known locally as "manzanita pattern glass" is
more often called "flora pattern glass" internationally.

Other (less-traditional) patterns include "aqualite", "bamboo",
"chinchilla", "crystal", "diamond", "masterlite", "mistlite",
"rain", etc., etc..

Pattern glass is generally available in a bunch of different colors
and is most commonly 4mm (1/6") thick.

The main challenge is getting your dealer to understand just
exactly which pattern you want, kasi nga local terms don't
necessarily jibe with international ones. Again, it is often best
to print out an image and show it to your dealer.

May also be know abroad as "pressed glass," of the vintage kind, late 18th-early19 c., famously made in North America by Addison Glass (since the vintage is turn of the century, explains why those we have in the Philippines are of the era, i.e. when the Philippines Islands ("P.I." as referred to by the G.I lol ) was an American colony and middle class Filipinos traded more freely under its democratic, commerce-driven governance and GI goods more available. Also, this era was when Spanish or Spanish terms were still widely used and subsequently seamlessly integrated into American English, hence "manzanita."

Nowadays, cheaper ones from China can be had (see sites like Alibaba.com). ;p [INDENT]

Great tip re: letting the dealer/supplier know exact what pattern to reproduce or source as there can be many.

Another way, if more into the pattern than the color, is to frottage the pattern—it's placing paper over your pattern and rubbing the surface roughly, lightly but repeatedly with pencil to get the pattern impression. (Frottaging is a basic sketch technique taught us in uni. which many of us have actually done at some point 🙂 )

Cheers~

Be careful when working with glass, you may need some protective gear, glasses and gloves. Anyway, protection is always welcomed by those who work in harmful conditions. F.e., my friend is a gamer and as for I take care of him I've bougth him such computer eye strain glasses glasses . Perhaps such stuff can be found concerning the processing of glass as well.
