Guys,

Have you encountered any of these terms (Calcimine or Kalsomine)? I suppose others are using this as "pang hilamos" but have bad effects on top coat paint because of its acidic property. Any inputs regarding this material is greatly appreciated. Many thanks

Regards,

Jay

Re: Calcimine or Kalsomine Paint

I think usually these are water based paints like latex, without any content of acrylic. Usually these are the low quality paint, the cheapest you can find in hard ware stores specially when all saints day or all souls day are coming. Are you getting at what I am thinking ? Its those water based white paints used for white washing "nitsos" in cemeteries in the provinces that really doesn't last long. When the paint dries, in a few days when you run your palm or fingers on the surface, you get powder residues. 🙁
In laymans term its called yata as " Apog Paint "

So I guess I'd rather not use it as a base paint 'coz for sure final top coats will eventually peel of in the long run, not so good and just a waste of money. 😮

Better get a real latex paint marked with a semi gloss, it uses an acrylic emulsion that will make bonding of paint molecules more durable. Then top coat it with complete gloss type of latex paint.

Hope this helps bro !! 😉

White powder as it was fondly called by painters, is actually Kalsomine, w/c they add to Latex paint or Flat wall enamel as a prep material for wall and ceiling application. It is the most common material used because of its filling properties and economical value. The problem is it doesn't hold well with high moisture environment and is prone to molds, mildew, cracking and peeling. There are suitable concrete and gypsum putty formulas available that are designed for base prep material. Also do not use Gypsum putty as your prep material for concrete surfaces.

Yes, but only in this sense:

[COLOR="Red"]Kalsomine plus water is basically whitewash, containing slaked lime (Ca(OH)2) and chalk (CaCO3)

When you take [COLOR="red"]kalburo/carburo (calcium carbide or CaC2) and add water, you get acetylene gas
and a leftover solution of slaked lime (Ca(OH)2): close enough to traditional whitewash. Chalk na
lang ang kulang. Even without adding chalk, it is used as (an even poorer) substitute to traditional
whitewash for use in refreshing sidewalk curbs etc. Whitewash is meant to be a cheap finish, not
a primer for paint. It actually prevents proper adhesion between paint and the substrate.

As WillyF says, kalsomine powder is often mixed with white latex paint to thicken it into a cheap
(and often inferior) putty, spackle or filler... aka masilla, pang-batak.
