Good day guys! Starting tommorow I am going to build myself a new projector screen. It's about time to upgrade from 85" to 120", from my 8 years old Plus 480p DLP to my 3 weeks old Optoma 720p DLP. Anyway this time I am going to use PAINT intead of the costly screen canvas. I will do this based on the article:
http://www.projectorcentral.com/paint_perfect_screen_$100.htm?page=Finding-the-Perfect-Paint

May I ask, have anyone of you guys tried painted screen? Anyone familiar with local brand Satin-finished paints (boysen and davies have one). Is Sherwin-Williams paints, which is featured in the article, still in the local market? There is a couple of imported brands available at ACE but would like to know the sheen differences compared to the local ones. How do you measure gain? Be reporting progress soon...

Re: Diy projector screen

i once used the stain halt primer by ace for my screen..the sheen is just flat, relatively a little off white and easy to clean..that to me is the most economical than the commercial ones..only that it isnt retractable.

whats the maximum throw distance of your projector btw?

i am dreaming of the hi def projectors..but my infocus is still ok and i have more than 1700 hours left before i change the lamp.

please do post your build.

Re: Diy projector screen

My screen is just the whitest polyester cloth I could find. Stapled it onto a makeshift frame. Behind it, I just got several yards of black cloth as a background curtain. Didn't even hem it.

SWMBO thinks it looks professional, ala cinema of old. Nobody could see the shoddy workmanship because it's in our home theater where lights are always dim.

Been happy with it for about 6 years now. Don't know if display quality's any worse than pro screens because I have nothing to compare with. Ignorance is bliss.;)

Re: Diy projector screen

Projector central recommends throw distance of 14' 2" for a 120" diagonal screen for the optoma. My old screen is the backside of an upholstery material called K-14. Works for me but the commercial size of the k-14 is limited to only about 85-90". ProjectorCentrals experimented using the Studiotek-100 as comparison to the satin paint.

Doc, for clarification or correction, the material is KFC not K14. For a 120" diagonal screen I may need 59" x 105" plus 4" for every side for the black borders. The KFC material is available only at 60" height not enough for borders. Like I said I used the backside.

Re: Diy projector screen

you mean to say that the KFC 14 cloth has a white side and a backside? is it heavy like canvas?

Re: Diy projector screen

Name is KFC only. the front side is available in different colors. the backside is kind of a white lining. Very light and kinda stretchy. It is called PVC leather fabcric. sells around 70-80p / linear yard.
