Re: Plywood or Playboard for Flooring?

IMHO plyboard has better strength compared to plywood bec of the solid wood panels sa core nya depende sa pagkakagawa ha kasi Problem Lang with plyboard is if you get an AMPAW meaning Hindi maganda yung core. Plyboard does not sag unlike plywood does pero depende pa din sa gamit/purpose. tama si ^bro Joey na dapat yung orientation ay perpendicular sa takbo ng core otherwise pwede mabali. Also another issue with plyboard is wala Syang marine type kaya Kung Hindi mo paint or Lagyan ng liston eh may probability na matuklap yung first layer and ayun exposed na yung solid wood sa loob. For flooring I would use the plyboard painted with epoxy primer para matibay sa moisture , pero ako yon ha.

Minsan kasi nag talo kami nun carpenter ng mom ko, gusto nay plyboard for closet door, ako naman marine plywood gusto ko. Both 3/4"in thick size of panel is 24"x 96",pareho namin ginamit. Yung plywood nag warp nun 3hinges Lang nakalagay compared sa plyboard na tuwid talaga, talo ako hahaha kaya napilitan ako gumamit ng piano hinge para macontrol yung warpage.

Nakabawi Lang ako Kay manong nun nakatsamba sya ng AMPAW sa gitna at kumalas yung core hahaha. May pros and cons talaga.

may point kayo, Sir! pero nasa pilipinas tayo laging may ampaw ang plyboard at yung solid wood sa loob hindi din buo at walang dugtong in between. mas matibay pa din ang plywood since lahat ng veneer nakaglue unlike sa plyboard. plyboard is best for cabinetry especially sa shelving and drywall partition. a good plywood should be warp-resistant. i would never used plyboard as a closet door dahil maghihiwalay at maghihiwalay ang outer veneer nun for sure.

that is my opinion. 🙂 have a great evening, mga PHM! mukhang konti tao dito at sa kabila ah.

i have yet to see a locally made plyboard which will satisfy me in terms of strength when used as a flooring material.

plywood will warp if poorly stored but i have a brand whom i trust since time immemorial.

since the material is going to be used for flooring, it will be exposed to a lot of moisture and this is the plyboard's enemy..however finished, there is this possibility of the woodplanks inside the core to detach one by one...this is less when used as a door for cabinets (like woodworker boy said).

if you are going to make the plyboard as substrate for laminate flooring, the more probability of making it weak due to moisture issues.

if you want your floor flat, firstly you need to straighten the wooden floor joists/battens..and of course the surface beneath the wood battens must be flat as well.

magastos sa floor joists ang plyboard when jointing edge to edge...dont expect it to withstand the screw with only a few mm of its edge sitting on a 2x floor joists..and i dont think he will use the 2 x 4 face down!

i am for durability so i chose plywood over plyboard. sayang pera eh.

my last post.

Re: Plywood or Playboard for Flooring?

You'd be surprised at how many variants there really are in the plywood industry. The problem is in the Philippines, we only get a few types and they seemed to have been classified only as marine grade and ordinary. The other problem is the kind of wood they use for veneering plywood nowadays come from young trees or unscreened species that have wood infestations even before they slice and use them for veneering. Wood borers or wood mite embryos present in the wood after lamination hatch and find their way out and eventually eat the plywood. This problem is prevalent in the plywood or plyboard we get locally. I think you'd be better off with FICEM as your floor substrate given the chance that infestation might set in the future, w/c is likely to happen. I dread to think of the dangers it might pose to you and your family should that happen.

Re: Plywood or Playboard for Flooring?

good tip there brader willy.

i guess i will have to say yes to ficem boards..the sturdiest in the long run...stil within price range eh?

but i am thinking that the battens were laid on a concrete floor.

dont tell me the battens are high up in the ceiling to make the second floor!

ah my real last post.

hehe

Re: Plywood or Playboard for Flooring?

A more suitable brand of Ficemboard is FLEXBOARD. Current cost is 807.00/square meter or around 75.00/square foot @ 18mm. Like I said, the dangers of using plywood outweigh your concerns for the cost of FICEM. Once the plywood starts to show infestation powder, peeling and cracking, eventual board breakage comes next. If the substrate application is for the 2nd floor then it is more dangerous.
