Hi guys, I am planning to have some furnishings (cabinets, storage bed, etc) made out of inexpensive boards like MDF, plywood or plyboard. Anyone knows which one has less VOC (volatile organic compounds) content?

Re: VOCs in Expensive Boards?

for sure formalin is found in mdf and it only comes out when dimensioning the material and so painting or laminating them wont vaporize the toxic gas.

do you intend to make them (cabinets) yourself?

if these VOC's in those boards tickled your strange fear then get a better grip from very volatile liquids found in paint solvents etc.

you must fear xylene next to formalin.

Hi, violaine. Thanks for the reply. Actually, I am not really that afraid of VOCs. I just read it from somewhere (and in an episode of Top Design - Green Challenge episode yata yun) that MDFs are not advisable in bedrooms due to their VOCs. But Andrew Dan Jumbo of Take Home Handyman and While You Were Out uses MDF a lot. He always paints them though.

I wish I could make the furniture myself. But I don't have the power tools and the time. 🙁 . I have made some designs for my shelves, cabinets, tables, storage beds/sofa beds, etc. I am really a newbie in woodworking, compared to you guys here.
