Hi guys, I'm doing some DIY painting inside our house 'coz ever since our house was built, it never got painted inside or out. I'm using acrylic primer & paint on the walls and ceilings even if they have different materials(concrete and wood). And basically it gave a satisfactory finish( for my standards ).
I was wondering if I can also use acrylic paint on our old metal windows painted with enamel? 'Coz it would really save me time and money, and would even spare my family from the irritating fumes of enamel or other paints. TIA guys.

Yes you can paint anything you want there, BUT, I said with a big BUT ha, you have to prepare the surface of your steel windows, you have to wire brush it, removing the peeling enamel paint or sand is too to remove rust appearing on the metal after which you wipe it with TURCO rust converter then those metal that are exposed should be primed with metal primer. You cannot just paint acrylics on bare metal, acrylics are water based and soon if you do apply it on metal then expect rust to appear in no time.
It would be better to just paint your steel windows with gloss black enamel again, and if you are thinking about the fumes of the paint, then try using an electric fan behind you while doing the job, if you are inside, directed to the window blowing air outside.

You're right. I'm planning to paint the windows black. What if there were no peeling and rust on the windows, would the acrylic paint last long on the old enamel paint?

i tried painting acrylic over enamel before..hindi bumula/blistered..or peeled naman..
the key is to sand the enamel lightly which has accumulated dirt and everything...
i believe, the enamel paint has undergone some chemical transformation in time (maybe years and exposed to the elements) and may bond to the acrylics nicely.
either painting it over with QDE once again is just fine..only cumbersome needing paint thinner, disposable paint brush and some good old cotton gloves...
put a grain of salt on this advice though...sanding those hard to reach crevices on these window grills arent for the faint of heart...you need strong..yes strong determination and a little obsessive-compulsive behaviour! hehe

Thanks Doc, I guess I'll just have to get the windows cleaned for dust then start painting with acrylic. And yes I don't think it would peel or blister after 30yrs of enamel paint on it.
By the way Doc, do i need to prime it first, or just do the top coat?

lightly sanding the previous enamel coat will serve as your primer.

Thanks again Doc. I'll be going out this afternoon to buy the materials so I can start painting tomorrow while letting the glue dry on my RT build:thumbup:.
