anyone done this before?

are there specialized stones for a bench grinder specifically for sharpening knives? - i find those sold in the market too coarse.

tips will be highly appreciated.

Well our in-house mechanic uses this style but only on damaged and "bungi-bungi" edge just to straighten it. otherwise manual "hagod" using the standard stone is more than enough to maintain the sharpness. Mauubos kasi kaagad yung knife Kung
Aging sa grinding wheel.

Re: bench grinder for shapening kitchen knives

bench grinders spin too fast , and the wheel's a bit small for the kitchen knife- the bevel will be to acute and the heat will ruin the temper.

i hand-sharpen. i usually grind approximately 25° primary bevel, then a 35° cutting bevel. the 25° bevel's sharp but delicate - best for razors and fillet knives. general purpose knives can use bigger, more durable angles.

the trick is to grind one side until a "wire" can be felt on the opposite side. only then is the opposite side honed.

what stone? i start with a generic carborundum stone - when it 'dishes' or gets deeper in the middle, i get rid of it. once most of the work is done i use the finer grit stones para tipid.

btw makita sells a water stone sa hardware - medium grit.

for finishing, i use fine sanpaper on glass, then leather strop or steel.

Ha-ha. Mangkukulam talaga!

That Tormek is one great system. Just be prepared to pay the price.

Bought this from Amazon. Works very well. You just have to remember that it's 110v
