Re: G.I. roof and gutter painting

Better Check the Condition of existing Paint is its still intact.
Check if the GI sheet is still good for painting.
Clean the Surface to remove Dirt, Grease etc before applying new paint.
i use pressure washer and liquid soap and Brush to clean and scrub.
optional you may sand it a bit para mas kumapit ang paint.
i prefer painting it with water base paint. like sa boysen roof guard.
for multiple coats. try to use 2 colors, so that you can see if its evenly coated.
i prefer using roller to apply paint mas even.

So, the roofing sheet and gutters are unpainted?
Unless you're willing to primer that roof, it may be too fresh for paint to adhere to.
It's common practice to let a new roof 'cure' for several months, that is to say: to
allow the zinc galvanization to develop an oxide layer which paint can adhere to.
The layer of oxidation in effect serves as a primer.

You can tell by running your fingers over galvanized sheet: if it's still smooth, it's
not ready yet. If there's a chalky/fuzzy finish to it, you're good to go. If however
there's some rust, then you waited too long, lol.

Even with a roof cured, some painters degrease the roof (using rubbing alcohol and
rags) first, to ensure proper adhesion of the roof paint.

Thanks Sir Horge!
Actually this GI sheets are a weeks old and it's smooth.
So I have to wait for 3-4 mos. for the GI sheets to cure sir and apply primer?

Re: G.I. roof and gutter painting

For new G.I. roof or any galvanized sheet. We etch the surface using Boysen Metal Etching Solution. Dilute 1 part to 9 parts water. Before applying metal primer.

Sir bryant77 can this be done even if the GI roof is new?
Thank you sir! your advice is well noted. (Dilute 1 part to 9 parts water. Before applying metal primer.)

Re: G.I. roof and gutter painting

Yes, even your gi roof is new.
Tomorrow i will be needing the boysen metal etching solution to prepare my GI top rail prior to painting. I will post some picture how the solution reacts to galvanized iron.

Re: G.I. roof and gutter painting

ive used boysen metal etching solution. it will make the metal a little dark and make the surface rough. good preparation for painting 🙂

Re: G.I. roof and gutter painting

Sorry about the lousy paint job on your GI roofing bro. There is an options you can do to rectify your roof problem. But its gonna be tiring and lots of work and may be expensive too.

1. Wire brush your roof to remove the flaking paint and expose the metal roof itself, use an angle grinder fitted with a wire wheel to make it faster.

2. After which you clean the roof properly removing dust particles and perhaps scraping left over flaking paints. Then go to the next step of applingy the metal primer epoxy, and then let dry properly.

3. Then apply your choice of roof guard paint by brush.

I did not mention about the metal etching solution coz during the wire wheeling procedure, that shiny coating of your GI roofing could have been scratched or removed already but it is still up to you if you feel to apply the solution just to have some peace of mind.

Hope others would chime in too as well !!

Good luck and hope this helps ! 😉

jen, you can apply 2 or more coats of Drylock or Primero to seal your entire concrete gutter.

This will also help make the surface somewhat smooth. You can do this easily if you are a DIYer.
