Hello,
Any tips on how to remove rust and maintain a galvanized tower for an overhead tank?
I'm note sure what chemical solution, primer, paint and tools to use.
Like if it's advisable to use Metal Etching Solution or some kind of rust converter
and will using them weaken or strengthen the structure?
Thanks!
Re: Galvanized tower maintenance
normal Rust converters work ok, Liha to death ka after the rust converter is applied (read instructions) Rust converter is usually phosphoric acid (active ingredient) that oxidezes the existing iron oxide rust to form a black oxide coating, this black oxide coating PREVENTS further advancement of the iron oxide rust.. However this coating is still thin and will eventually wear off due to weathering.
So its been advised to us to still sand it off until you see a nice clean metal surface.
As for the primer, Boysen has a universal primer that supposedly works on galvanized steel without the need to use metal etching solution (this is nasty) the product is Prime Guard.
After applyig prime guard it is ready to receive ANY kind of paint,,, water based, oil based, enamel.. latex , whatever. Its their universal primer and i think its worth the investment. Or you can leave it as is without any final coat.
Using rust converter itself should not weaken the structure as it doesnt really do anything on the unaffected steel only the iron oxide (rust)

Re: Galvanized tower maintenance
It is better if you contact any expert to give you right advice to remove the rust.Galvanized sheets are widely used and hence it is easy to find people who deal with it. Do not use any chemical without consulting.

good advice, we have a Boysen thread here somewhere. just search it and you can find who to call and ask. They will help and even make an ocular inspection to help you. free of charge iirc.
