Magandang araw PHM!

1. duplex type (3 units)
2. 4 decades na ata yung wiring nung last unit.
3. 1st floor concrete (sala at kusina), 2nd floor wood (2 bedroom)

a. Outlets
b. Lights
c. Electric oven/range (baka humirit si misis e)

Re: House electrical rewiring/rerouting, etc.

1. depende sa total load... but usually 10AWG will do base sa setup your planning to do..
2. a. depende uli sa load but I would recommend no 12 or 10
b. 12 - before no 14 lang ok na..
c. 10
d. 8 para sure pag nag sabay welding and compressor etc.
do not use TW, its better pag THHN or THWN..

3. after the load computation,use the next higher ampere rating ng CB.

Re: House electrical rewiring/rerouting, etc.

iirc sa aking electrification class e parang ganito:

15 A Gage 14
20 A gage 12
30 A gage 10
and so on....

plus, di dapat lalampas ng 6 (or 8 ba?) outlets kapag 15 A, etc.???? mga rules ba on electrical system wiring

Re: House electrical rewiring/rerouting, etc.

Bro Mike,

Mahirap magbigay ng figures in electrical it must be supported by a computations.

I suggest buy the book " Electrical Layout and Estimate" by Max Fajardo. We used it as a reference in designing electricals for residential houses. Meron step by step procedures and useful tables in the book that will guide you in load computations, wire sizing, etc.

After designing submit the plans to a Proffesional Electrical Engineer for checking and approval before executing it.

Re: House electrical rewiring/rerouting, etc.

To answer your questions

1. Minimum size for the service entrance is No. 8 awg or 8.0mm2 as required by the code. The Meralco will require you to have 2 black colored wire + white colored for the ground.

2. Minimum wire size.
Outlet - 3.5mm2 or no. 12.
Lights - 2.0mm2 or no.14
Electric oven/range - 5.5mm2 or no. 10
Mini shop - need to determine the loads.

Re: House electrical rewiring/rerouting, etc.

When you say two wires, does it mean that both wires are live? As I recall in GenSan, one wire is live
and the other wire is the messenger wire (which is grounded also) but it is different here in Manila where both wires are live.
Nevertheless, install ground wire also separate from the messenger wire.
Note: Never handle that ground wire/messenger wires with bare hands, always assume that is live.

Re: House electrical rewiring/rerouting, etc.

3 unit duplex kasi yung bahay. 1st unit is my parents'. 2nd and 3rd ay paupahan. but the 3rd unit ay nakatoka na sa akin by next year.

Re: House electrical rewiring/rerouting, etc.

@MikeD,

Just a few tips to contribute as I recently had gone thru rewiring and increased load in my house…

1. Have your house checked and if possible make an as-built plan of the critical aspects like Electrical, Structural, Plumbing and Sanitation etc. You and your future generations need a guide somehow whenever someone takes over the place. It is cheaper to have these plans or prints made than rebuild from a disaster like fire accidents due to poor or clueless load distribution.

2. Building codes require that you have, as mentioned by Bryant77, three wires as explained. Your local Power distribution company (you said you are from the province so I assume it's served by a local utility company) will look at your load and distribution plan or inspect the premises in order for you to get your service contract transferred to your name or your load increase be approved.

3. If you plan to use the shop for full time load with equipments like Welders and machineries in tow then I suggest you apply for a separate meter base for the shop in order to save on power rates and to avoid frequent overloading and load re-classification w/c will eventually reflect in your bill payments. Power Companies are notorious nowadays and are watchful of power hungry customers.

4. You said the house was built some 4 decades ago, the 21st Century is filled with gadgets and gizmos all of w/c eat so much juice so please consider these in your load computation. Modern electronics are badly affected by welders and electric motors so try not operate them from the same distribution line. Increasing your CB size against your load isn't simple that's why you need an expert to compute your potential load so they may configure the proper limits avoiding unfortunate incidents.

5. Modern Gensets are compact and affordable nowadays, If your area is notorious for Brownouts then try to include them in your contingencies.

I had my place swept by a licensed Electrical Engineer and they made the load plan I submitted to the power company and the local government for my Certificate of Electrical Inspection. I now sleep soundly and my electrical bill seems to have gone down by 30% due to correct load handling. Good Luck!

Re: House electrical rewiring/rerouting, etc.

eto guide para sa electrical wires from: http://www.phelpsdodge.com.ph/Home/Customer-Support/FAQS.aspx

Where do you usually use the royal cord?
Designed for use in portable and movable tools and equipment, portable appliances, small motors and associated machinery.

Where do you usually use the PDX wire?

Usually used for low cost housing because it is made of 2 TW cables with jacket. No need to use wire cladding.

Meralco is also using it as service drop cable. With its construction it lessens power pilferage (antitheft cable).

Where do you usually use THHN Solid wire?THHN Stranded wire?

THHN/THWN-2 is a type of building wire. Meaning it is used inside the building or house. THHN/THWN-2 is made of flame retardant PVC that self-extinguish flame.

Solid conductor is used for simple circuit
Stranded conductor is used for circuits that has complex runs. Stranded is more flexible than solid

How would you know the proper size of wire to use on different applications?

Usually it is being computed by a designer but there is a typical rule-of-thumb being used and this are as follows:

2.0mm2: small lighting
: lighting switches
3.5mm2: multiple lighting (around 20 lights per line)
: Convenience outlet (6-10 COs depending on the design and expected load)
Usual CO rating is 180Watts/CO

*though 3.5mm2 is rated more than the additional rating as mentioned above Voltage Drop should also be considered. More lighting or CO’s means longer wire length that also means bigger voltage drop.

5.5mm2: motor loads and air-conditioner
1HP motor = 8 amperes
1.5HP motor = 10 amperes

*Though running amp is small, motors have very high starting current. Around 3 times of its rated amp rating

8.0mm2 and bigger: feeder lines
: Bigger loads like (commercial and industrial applications)
Malls Air conditioning system (FCU, CHW Pumps)
Pumps
Elevators
Escalators

In a typical house, what size of wire should be used from service line of Meralco to the breaker and outlets?
Minimum feeder size is 5.5mm2 but actual load should be computed to know the proper sizing of wire.

Is there a relationship to the size of wire to be used and the supply (if 110V or 220V)?

THHN/THWN-2 is rated 600V meaning it can accommodate both 110 or 220V.

How many years should it take before we rewire our houses?

Case to case basis but by visually inspecting the wire, rewiring may be done if you see that the PVC color is fading of cracks appear in the insulation.

Can we determine the length of wire based on its weight?

Theoretical computation can be done:
2.0mm2 = 24kg/km
3.5mm2 = 37kg/km
5.5mm2 = 58kg/km
8.0mm2 = 96kg/km
14mm2 = 147kg/km
22mm2 = 232kg/km
30mm2 = 311kg/km
38mm2 = 414kg/km

Will fire happen if the temperature rating exceeds 70oC on wet and 90oC on dry locations?

No such thing as 70 deg wire. Usual rating is 60, 75, and 90 deg. Failure that can lead to fire is a possibility when wire is not properly used.

What will happen when wire overloading occurs?

It will first Fume (uusok) then its insulation will melt that when it touches other materials in the line can cause fire.

What is the best type of wire for outdoor use and long distance connections?

Aluminum PE wires. Aluminum because it is ligher. PE because it is sun light and weather resistant.

What are the other types of wires aside from PERMALITE?

Electrical wire has very wide variety. There are typical standard wires and there are wires that are made for special cases. As of present PD has the largest manufacturing capability in making different kinds of wire in the Philippines.

How do we determine if a Phelps Dodge wire is fake?
Look for the seal, weigh the box, match the color.

Re: House electrical rewiring/rerouting, etc.

Mike,

If I were you I will consult a Professional Electrical Engineer Eng'r to design the electrical plans. Just provide him a sketch of your house plan & loads. He will do the load computations & circuitry and provide you a complete electrical plans in blueprint. My consultant charge me only P35/sq.m of house area. For a 200 sq.m. it is only P7,000. Then hire a licensed electrician to do the electrical works.

Re: House electrical rewiring/rerouting, etc.

Sirs, even if separate ang meter for the power tools especially welding machine, would it affect the lifespan (in the long run) yung mga household appliances like tv, dvd players, etc???

Re: House electrical rewiring/rerouting, etc.
