Hi guys
My exterior door knob to my storage room
I tried drilling the keyhole but the bit snapped
Should i just hack off the knob? Hack saw or angle grinder?
Re: how to break door knob?
Photo?
What kind is it? Is it the one with integrated deadbolt? There are kasi screws that attach on both sides and also on the side (where the bolt comes out) and hacking it may not be enough.
Nangyari na sa 'kin yan so tiyagaan lang. Had to use one of those screw extractors.
Re: how to break door knob?
I'll post photos later
Its a single knob withkeyhole. No dead bolt. No visible screws and no way to detach plate without breaking off the knob by force... I think
Its about time I buy am angle grinder anyway.. I think haha
Re: how to break door knob?
Isn't there some kind of slot near the neck of the knob where you can jam a flat screwdriver into to pop out the knob?
Re: how to break door knob?
Hmmmm there is, but I never got it to pop the knob due to the angle of the hole... Wala along bwelo
Re: how to break door knob?
If the lockset has failed and sealed the door shut;
If kicking the door open (breaking the deadlatch) isn't an option;
If you've jammed the tumbler with a broken drillbit;
If you can't uninstall the lockset;
If your door is sturdy enough:
If you have a replacement lockset ready;
Beat DOWN on the knob until you get it out of the way, and can access the latch
assembly. Longnose pliers can then be used to pull the latch tabs, to get the door
open. A variation on this (only seen it done once) is to use the hammer to drive a
fat steel spike straight through the tumbler, but the guy doing it had the muscles
of (a shorter and darker-skinned) Thor, and I don't see how this would work versus
certain lockset designs --it'll get the door open, but uninstalling the damaged lock-
set becomes far more challenging.
Assuming the door is solid and opens inward, kicking the door open (breaking the
usually pot-metal latch) is much faster but risks foot injury. Your choice.
A grinder is as-likely as a hammer to damage the door, is a lot more prep-work and
more hazardous (personal injury, igniting flammables), but if it gives you more joy,
then joy-on.
Of course, I'm assuming you're locked out of the storage room. (see below)

Yep, cylindrical locksets typically have a takedown slot, but only on the INTERIOR knob
(for obvious security reasons). Beebeenator may only have access to the EXTERIOR
knob. These days, for manufacturing savings, exterior and interior knobs can be identical
with respect to sporting a takedown slot, but only the INTERIOR knob's slot provides
actual access to a detent pad, for disassembly.

Re: how to break door knob?
Thanks JM2
When you say beat down...strike the hammer perpendicular against the knob perpendicularly.
I tried stricking the tumbler (keyhole right?) But like you said... We need a Thor.
To be honest..... I'd have a lot of fun with a grinder... Which means I need to procure that bosch angle grinder with variable speed hahahahaha
Re: how to break door knob?
Would inserting an old/expired credit card work? I tried it once and it worked for me. I just hope it could with yours.

But that doesn't address the topic [COLOR="Blue"]"how to break door knob". π
Kidding aside...
Inserting a credit card between faceplate and strike plate exploits
the sloped end of the bolt, but only when the door opens/swings
away from you, as is probably is the case here.
It's certainly worth a try.
:2thumbsup:
I have to note that the trick is very hit-or-miss. BTDT on dozens of
renovations of apartment units (where the tenant fled with unpaid
rent as well as all the keys).

What!!! It always works in the movies! π

You will also note how, in the movies: there's rarely a doorstop in the jamb
to hinder l'insertion de la carte de crΓ©dit,
π
I had a Schlage deadbolt lock up permanently after immersion c/o Ondoy 2009.
I wanted to try to save the lockset, so no caveman-tactics. Besides, there was
nothing much to hammer on, and both the door and jamb were steel. I took a
mini-grinder, drill and cold chisel not to the lockset, but to the jamb (just square
tubular MS).
The ^same could be done where a wooden jamb was involved, using a chisel.
The repairs afterward would be a lot easier too.

Based on the movies, you just kick the door in, no?
What ... is like a credit card but can negotiate an S curve?
Re: how to break door knob?

It just occurred to me...
Maybe beeb broke that drillbit and left it in the doorknob on purpose,
or at least he wanted to: subconsciously. All just to justify his buying
that varspeed Bosch grinder he was oh-so-quick to mention.
So much trouble, when the truth is nothing to be ashamed of.
Why can't we just be honest... to ourselves?
Play it, Billy...

I agree with horge... but i only work pag may konting gap between the door and the door jamb/face plate.... pwede gumamit ng angle grinder or mallet. pero nung na lock din yung room ng tatay ko, wood chisel gamit ko para magkaroon ng gap sa door jamb. Pero refinish lang after.
