We have stainless steel stuff made at work and we cant figure out how to get rid of the blackened welding lines.

Its used for food prep area hence it has to be perfectly smooth and no signs of corrosion or else we wont be certified.

would a 60 grit random orbital sander work? i read that it can be done with a variable speed grinder and different attachments. But i cant convince the boss to buy one..

its arc welded not tig welded (i am regretting this) arc welded coz the contractor priced it cheaper but it looks terrible. We tried using nihon tig cleaner but it didnt work (daw...)

I dont think i will lose my job but it would be great if i can solve this little problem 🙂

Thanks

Best way is to use a sand blaster but if your boss won't spring even for wire brush drill attachments you're not going to get a sandblaster. How about painting joint stripes onto it. You can say they are demarcation lines.

wire brush drill attachment wouldnt budge the welding marks.

Well the boss is willing to spend if i can guarantee its going to work.

We found some sanding attachment for angle grinders. Will try it and then will also give feedback here.

Sand blasting would be nice.. nice satin finish too..always wanted one to refinish some of my well loved seiko watches 🙂

Wait a minute Bee you want to remove the welding marks - by this you mean it will look as if it had not been welded? If this is the case I believe there is a lot more work than simply sandblasting it. Sorry I was thinking that you wanted to remove the flux.

oh ok then in that case I believe a sand blaster is the best then a wire brush on an angle grinder.
