Need help from the AC experts, I'm more of a DC guy:).

Our outlets read unevenly- example: one leg will read 160v while the other will read 80v, but as you see, the total is fine (240v).

Is that normal? Our kitchen steamer broke under warranty, and the technician is blaming it on the uneven voltage.

depends on your location. i've read that some electric distributors give 240/0 volts, maybe some give 160/80.

that being said, i can't figure out why the uneven voltages would matter. sa US they have 110/0.

Re: How to fix uneven voltage?

make a complain with your power company.

if that thing happens in Australia. They would replace your appliance.

Ah so it's normal to have that? The technician of our steamer was probably just looking for an "excuse".

Have not heard of '160/80' as an intentional and/or stable configuration on 2-wire 220 V or 3-wire 220/110 V service ... got a link or reference?

For 2-wire service, if 160/80 V is what is being measured from hot to neutral/ground/earth, I would be tempted as an experiment to put some load (e.g., incandescent bulbs) on the 'legs' to see how stable that 160 and 80 V are. I would expect the voltages to not be stable under load.

I can imagine a scenario involving 2-wire 220 V service from a bank of 2 or 3 transformers, where under certain wiring and earth conditions, one might measure something like 110 and 190 from hot lines to neutral/ground/earth (which would not be in-phase but vector-add up to 220) but this wiring condition is probably unlikely!

Re: How to fix uneven voltage?

240/0 was mentioned in a local blog about building a home in the provinces.
160/80 is just a hypothesis, speaking of which - how did the electrician measure the said voltages?
