Our garage roof has some leaks on it and the ceiling material used was gypsum board. There's already some discoloration and a rotten portion from where the water is seeping. The badly affected area is maybe 1" x 1". Assuming i could plug the hole on the roof and stop the water leak,

1) how should i replace the affected portion of the gypsum board?

2) if i can remove the 1" x 1" portion, is it straight forward to replace it with new gypsum board of the same size?

3) what sealant or other sticky substance can i use to join the new patch of gypsum board?

4) what's the smallest size gypsum board can i buy from the hardware?

5) is the procedure i'm thinking, the correct way to repair the ceiling?

Re: How to repair gypsum board ceiling?

Bro swordsman,

If I was to repair that ceiling, I would cut that rotten or overly soaked portion a bit larger say 2x2 or a bit more. Drill a hole in one corner so my wall saw can fit that hole and cut away the rotten portion then making sure the edges are dry so that when I replace that portion with another piece of gypsum brd the adhesive will stick properly on the edges.

As for adhesives, you can use the PIONEER Carpenters PVA wood adhesive, its resistant to heat and water when dry. You can also use the PIONEER Epoxy , also with a very strong bonding properties. Now after replacing the rotten portion and letting it dry for 24 hours, of course cutting lines will be evident, sand along the cutting lines, dust it off and apply some wood putty or masilya, let dry then sand again after which you can apply another thin layer of masilya to even out the surface then let dry completely before sanding, then apply white paint on it, hope its the color of your garage ceiling.

I just don't know if hardware stores sells half size of a full sheet, maybe you can ask friends if they have excess or retasos of this kind of material, hingi ka na lang ng konti. :p

HOPE this helps !!!!!!!! ;):)

Re: How to repair gypsum board ceiling?

First off, do not use glues or other forms of adhesives on your ceiling.

A 1x1 inch hole is very small, chances are that the effected area is much larger than what you are seeing. While it might not appear to be larger, chances are that the board has been wet further away from what you see and will have affected the materials.

Cut a hole about 1' x 1' and make sure that the edges are good and the material inside the board has not been effected by water. Then cut a new piece that will fit tightly in the ceiling.
Best way to support the new piece is to lay a piece of wood, larger than the hole, accross the opening. Then using a gypsum screw(s) attach the new piece to that wood. Its also a good idea to attach the wood to the existing ceiling.
Use plaster and tape (paper tape) around the edge, feathering out the plaster. Sand and repeat until you get a nice smooth finish, then paint.
