Re: metal etching solution vs turco

Metal etching solution and Turco. Turco is a rust converter which is mainly phosphoric acid. Metal etching solution could be mainly hydrochloric acid or could be nitric.

Re: metal etching solution vs turco

Well, if you're painting metal --
1. Use a rust converter first. Make sure to wash off any residue prior to painting on.
-- for rust converters, if you're in a rush, there's a brand that works in just minutes. The traditional rust converters you see in the market are kinda slow. I remember our metal workers in our factory before leaving metal bars soaked in rust converter (overnight?).

2. For metal primer, in case you want a long-lasting coat, I suggest that you go for an epoxy-based primer -- a lot better in preventing rust.

Hope my insight helped.

How about repainting home steel trusses? Any best recommendation /steps in repainting? Our house is made up of steel trusses and there are some rusts on the steels. And I want to repaint it. Any best kind of paint for repainting, any brand?

1. For repainting, it's advisable that you remove the previous coating first. However there will be some other considerations:

  • If the previous coat is epoxy-based and it's still adhering properly, you can paint over it directly.
  • Remove loose rust scales, a rust converter can do this.

2. For steel, I would recommend that you use an epoxy primer for painting. I'll recommend a brand used on marine vessels. You can try looking for the Cord brand.

If you're in the metro area, the brand I know of is in Handyman. It's called Turbo.
