Re: My fiberglass DIY

Started to fabricate a fiberglass sheet covering for my welding cart...

Built up layers using gel coat firat then layers of woven roving and chopped mat...

After 2 layers of woven roving and one layer of chopped mat... the finished FRP sheet installed on the top of the cart... 2 more to go..

Re: My fiberglass DIY

Very nice, Amboy!

I work with fiberglass and epoxy resins, too, on the boat I'm building so I can appreciate how tricky what you're doing is.

Some questions:

Didn't the joint between the two halves show when you glued them up?

Did you consider using balloons as mold? I have not tried it myself but was told sometime back that one can use inflated balloons as mold. Then, you can just pop them to release.

Why did you use CSM for your table, not fiberglass cloth?

Since the table is a welding cart, wouldn't it suffer burns later? I have not used resins for hot surface applications so not sure if it's heat resistant.

Hi bro balarila....

Wow... that's the direction I intend to go with my fiberglass diy... to build a fiberglass boat hopefully in the near future... 🙂

Now for your questions...

Yes the joints on the diffuser does indeed show and you were right about considering using a balloon as a possible plug, and I think it might have worked since the resin will not damage the balloon. I also considered using styrofoam balls as plug but read somewhere that it might dissolve with the resin. in the end, I chose to use the glass diffuser so I can replicate as close as possible the original design of the chandelier specially the port for the receptacle inside the diffuser.

I actually sandwiched the CSM in between layers of WR on the first FRP sheet I fabricated... however I am now using WCL to sandwich the CSM on the next FRP sheet I am fabricating for the sides of the cart. I used the CSM mainly to add bulk on the sheet.

The welding cart just houses my DC welder and I don't use it to actually weld materials on. The FRP sheet is just for protection against the weather and sparks from grinding/welding... and for cosmetic purposes also.

Thanks for the comments bro... I'm learning as I go with my fiberglass diy's... wish you could post your fiberglass boat diy also so we can learn from it also 🙂

Oh and just in case our friends are wondering why im interested in boat building... being from baguio and all... I was born and raised in subic... so the call of the sea is still very strong 🙂

Re: My fiberglass DIY

Ha-ha. You're from Baguio and wanting to build a boat. I'm from Antipolo and building one! Looks like I won't be the only one anymore that people call Noah.

My boat is not pure fiberglass. It will have a strip-planked hull, sheathed in fiberglass cloth. Bright finish, which means the wood will show through. Been at it more than two years now. Here's the thread on it: http://www.pinoyhandyman.com/showthread.php?t=1319&page=2

Haven't updated it in a few months. Will post more current photos soon.

Re: My fiberglass DIY

nice DIY sir!

you can also apply fire retardant solution to your welding cover.

Hi bro ossie... you're right I should have considered the fire retardant resin... 🙂
