hi,
i assembled a 2 stage water filter under our sink with stainless fittings male fittings. the threads on the filter housing are plastic female threads. i already did a few turns of teflon and on the second try, i did a dump load of teflon - BUT it still leaks!
the leak isn't that much just drops over a span of several minutes. but then yes its still leaking.
what's the proper way of joining stainless fittings against plastic fittings?
Re: plastic, stainless pipe threads with teflon still leaking
Did you check if you missed inserting a rubber gasket where the plastic pipe end meets the steel?
Plastic fittings are usually hand-tightening. Could you have over-tightened on the first try and made the threads loose already? In plumber's crude lingo: nabastos na.
Try replacing the plastic fitting with a bit more teflon than your first try.
If that is not an option, you'll have to look for a liquid gasket. There are many in mall hardware shops for various applications. They're applied with a gun. But, if this fitting is for your drinking water, you will need to check if the gasket is food grade.
BTW, as I recall, you are in the Manila Water service area. If you do not have any leaks or any tank between your water meter and your tap, then there is no risk of any intrusion into your water supply and I assure you that your tap water is safe to drink. No need for any filter.

hi,
the item didn't come with a rubber gasket insert - can this be bought?
yep we're using manila water. yes, i am aware that the water distributed is already potable, but the wife still prefers having a filter so i had to construct one.
Re: plastic, stainless pipe threads with teflon still leaking
Yes. Rubber gaskets are easily available in hardware stores. Just bring your plastic fitting for size reference.
Re: plastic, stainless pipe threads with teflon still leaking
is that good for drinking? is that the locally called sapatila or something else? which hardware store has this? i've gone through ace, wilcon, handyman in our area, marikina/cainta, they have none.
btw, the plastic ones are the female while the male ones are the stainless... the leak happens between them. size is 3/4".
Re: plastic, stainless pipe threads with teflon still leaking
Hi there spyghost,
I have been following this thread regarding a leak on the filtering system under your sink which you installed. If fittings and piping systems are already properly installed and you find it a hassle already to undo all the connections, I think the possible solution is to apply a some fair amount of waterstop putty around the area where the plastic fitting and stainless piping meets to stop the water leak that you see. Do it at night time when less people or non at all will use water. You can turn off the main valve of your water supply first to relieve pressure on the filter and stops/prevent leaking for a while, then apply your waterstop putty all around the connection then let dry overnight.
Its very easy to mix the two part puttys and also very easy to apply, I think this will solve your problem regarding the leak. 😉
Hope this helps. :soccer:

Re: plastic, stainless pipe threads with teflon still leaking
thanks rosy, yes it will, but i feel it's best to tackle it straight from where the leak really is coming from... but yes i've already considered this as my final option.
btw, is that safe for drinknig?
Re: plastic, stainless pipe threads with teflon still leaking
A big YES, it will not really affect the water inside and you will only apply the putty on where the water leak is and outside where the plastic female with thread and stainless fitting meets, and simply just stopping that leak.
Have done that on several occasions when I installed my own filters under the kitchen sink and the annex kitchen sink as well.

Re: plastic, stainless pipe threads with teflon still leaking
thanks rosy, your suggestion is considered.
in any case, if i'll be fitting an o-ring or gasket inside, what material is suitable for drinking water?
Re: plastic, stainless pipe threads with teflon still leaking
I've had a similar problem using a male stainless component "mating" with a plastic PVC female component.
Sayang din yung item. It was an angle valve/elbow combination.
My own suggestion is to go PVC all the way. Hindi naman siguro stainless ang piping nyo from the water meter to the underside of the sink.
Plus the filter itself is PVC. Parang mas terno yata.
