Granite tiles were installed in my house for less than a year.

Unfortunately, my genius contractor used muriatic acid to clean these tiles during construction. This removed the protective coating of the tiles that makes it glossy at the same time.

The tiles have dark marks following the wiping direction of the rug with muriatic acid. It even has a mark of bottle bottom of the acid. 😡

There is still a substantial amount that has not been paid to the contractor. I'm planning not to give this to him anymore because of the many headaches I got from him.

Is there a way to remove these marks and replace protective coating on them?

I would like to avoid removing and installing new tiles because it would make the house very messy again.

Please help.

Thanks.

Re: Refurbishing Granite Tiles

It also happened to my granite counter top. I did some DIYing but surrendered because I lack the necessary equipment to do so. I ended hiring a professional marble installer to do the re-polishing. His tools/equipments: sander/polisher/fine grits sand-papers/polishing compound. His output: lots of dusts/and a shiny counter-top.

I remember seeing them putting some powdery thing before honing(sanding with fine grits). I am sure there was no wax used. BTW i got an installer, those with small stores selling stones, along EDSA near Munoz area.

Re: Refurbishing Granite Tiles

there are some granite specific sealers sold at mc and ortigas depot sold by the gallon. caveat is the price and that the surface has to be really clean before use. if you need to repolish, try looking for a granite instsaller who uses a dustless polisher like the kind they use for parquet floors. good luck.

Re: Refurbishing Granite Tiles

i used a masonry sealer. silicon is the main ingredient. And i think its water based. Just a note on this, remember to wipe after application. The solution seeps into the granite since the granite is porous. you add as much as it can seep in. Once it stops seeping in you have to wipe it off (wait 5 minutes to check if it is still seeping in) otherwise it becomes really tacky and its hard to clean off.

I got PYE brand masonry sealer. I think i got it in wilcon depot. Oh... use a roller brush. Then have LOTS of rug

you can wax after the sealer.. but its no longer necessary and the sealer has two options. One is glossy the other is flat.

You can probably get away with borrowing an orbital sander and going from rough to fine grits. I would go from 60 to 80 to 100 to 120. And if there are still scratch marks i would go further to 180 then finish at 240. But i think 120 should give a nice finish on a rock hard surface.

Contractors unfortunately do not know everything they need to know. My contractor used TIRE BLACK!!!! on the granite.. WHAT THE HECK!!! ... i swore to myself.. and i dont normally swear ahahhahaha

Good luck!

You're right, I agree!!! 🙂

My granite tiles do not have scratches. But because muriatic acid was applied, the protective coating was removed and then when you look at it closely, you will see very tiny dark holes. I think the dirt sipped into it. I don't know if these black thingy can still be removed. Otherwise, I just have to seal it to prevent it from being more dirty looking. 🙁

Thanks bro.!

Re: Refurbishing Granite Tiles

For granite sealing, the best I've tried is the Hydrex Tenax, pricey but very much worth it. Usually available in granite slab suppliers. Price ranges from 1,300-1,500 per liter.

How much is the estimated area that a 1 liter container of sealant can cover?

Thanks.

Re: Refurbishing Granite Tiles

is there a grout sealant for flr tiles that would ensure the light colored grout will stay the same... we have an off-white grout for our 60x60 beige china granite tiles and its an eyesore seing some parts of the grout getting darker and darker everyday.. =(

i'm hoping that there is one in the market that can be applied easily... but if none, i might consider changing the grout color into dark.

There are several tile grout sealers in the local market....I have used ABC brand and so far so good.
