I'm cleaning my 9-year old condura. Found out that rust has started to develop on the frame of the condenser.

Rust converter reacts only with rust, right? The aluminum fins won't be affected, right?

They use a cocktail of LYE and Powder soap w/ water for the aluminum fins, but i just couldn't quite figure out yet the ratio of the mix. Rust converter, i just don't know it's effect on the fins but what i normally do is dismount the base of both coil and condenser before i clean it w/ the LYE mix. There are screws on the bottom of the housing that holds the condenser you can probably remove to raise a little the unit from it's base so you can run chemicals w/o affecting the coils. just make sure you use something stable to wedge it firmly w/o causing any stress or leaks on the copper tubes. Also rust converters/removers need to be washed w/ another chemical to stop the residual effect of the conversion (thinners, etc.). Good Luck.

Re: Rust converter for the aircon?

The rust is on the coil frame itself, so exposing the aluminum fins and copper/brass tubes to the rust converter is unavoidable. Fortunately nothing bad happened to them. 🙂

I just used water jet and compressed air to clean everything. I don't have access to lye (heck, I didn't even know what lye is), but lies I can fabricate. :p

Painted the rusted part over with red oxide primer only and then installed the aircon in the new room. That should last for several more years.

Hahaha! LYE or lye flakes i think is caustic soda, i could be wrong. It's always been called Lye & it isn't hard to find in hardwares. Good to know nothing wrong happened. :p
