Hi.

Inspected the gi roof of our house.

There are some areas that are rusted. I would say rested area would be around 3% to 5% of the whole roof area.

Before the rainy season comes, I'd like to have it repainted.

Am a newbie at these things, so pardon the newbie questions ...
1. Does all the old paint have to be removed ?
2. What are the steps ?

Thanks in advance.

Re: rusty roof

Hi.

After I apply the rust converter, should I let it stay overnight before washing with water ?

Also re primer, i bought a can that says to let it cure for 24 hours but doesnt say the best time to paint afterwards. If I paint 1 week later (for example) after primering, would that make the paint adhere better or worse to the primer ?

Thanks for your advice

Re: rusty roof

remove the any loose coating by scraping the flaking removing any rust with a wire brush and then abrade the remaining exposed metal by wire brush or sanding. Use a good cleaning detergent solution such as simple green, to wash the metal surface prior to the application or any coatings. Be certain that the surface is good and clean, free of any oils, grease, dirt or debris.

Re: rusty roof

Hope my advice would still be timely for you, this is based on my own experience because I too am the one personally paints my roof every 2 or 3years.

For starters, in removing loose paint particles and rust I suggest you use a drill or a grinder attached with
wire brush instead of the handheld brush. Kabitan mo na lang tool mo ng long electrical extention paramaka abot sa bubong. Believe me ists the fastest way in removing unwanterd rust.

Then wipe off the rust paticles and apply rust converter, let dry for 24 hours,
after 20 or 24 hours simply wipe off the white residues on top of the painted area, please don't ever use
water to clean the exposed galvanize, you will just invite rust to the metal.

Next step will be to immediately apply two coats of metal primer to protect the exposed GI metal , then
let it dry. Now if you are not gonna finish it with your preffered finishinf top paint, at least it is for the mean time protected by the two coats of metal primer. Sana naka tulong ako bro.
