Dear guys,

I plan to renovate my 2nd floor bathroom which was constructed in the late 1950's (pretty old). It is seated on a mortar bed supported by wooden beams which has water leaks/seepages when being used for bathing. I bought I new set of water closet and lavatory and plans to change the floor/wall tiles as well. The problem is, the existing tile seems to be hard to chip out (old ceramic tiles do) are which probably would take a couple of days to be done considering I would be hiring someone to do the job (sort of uneconomical). I am considering tile over tile installation for the project at least for the walls.Question is, is this good or it is realible and woth it? I plan to use ABC tile adhesive ( http://www.abc.ph/products.htm ) .

Could you please enlighten me. God Bless..

Re: Tile over tile installation for bathroom renovation?

You can use tile on tile. But you may need another ABC product called Redifix to get the tile adhesive enough to stick to. Redifix is mixed with cement and painted onto the tile surface. The result is a rough surface to which the tile adhesive can easily adhere to.

But you should worry about the water leaks, which will eventually rot the wooden beams. You can lay a new mortar bed on the old tile, but making sure that put a plastic membrane above the old tile to prevent any water leaks. Fold the plastic up to the walls, in effect creating a bag to hold water. On the floor openings, meaning the toilet and floor drains, use Vulcaseal or any other sealant to make sure that there are no leaks between the plastic and the drains. You can used 2X2 welded wire mesh to reinforce the mortar bed.

Re: Tile over tile installation for bathroom renovation?

Tile over tile installation is a common renovation practice. As long as the existing wall and/or floor is structurally sound, the install won't be a problem. You mentioned that the floor joists show signs of water leakage. I would pay attention to this first before doing anything else, see if it needs to be fixed. Remember that adding another layer of cement and tile over your existing floor would add considerable weight to it. 2diy4's suggestion of laying a waterproof membrane and sealant is a good idea. If I were you I wouldn't even omit this part.

As to the walls, the most important part is prepping it so that the new layer of thinset mortar and tile would adhere to it. The best tool to roughen the wall would be a belt sander. Rinse it well after sanding.

I have looked at the ABC products you mentioned. I suggest you use the ABC Tile adhesive-heavy duty and Redfix additive for tile laying. Mix and apply only the amount of adhesive/additive that you will use for at least 15 minutes.

Good luck on your project!

mga sir, may question lang ako. Pag tinitingnan ko kasi brochures/demo ng ABC and the like, gumagamit sila ng "notched" trowel when applying the adhesive. Nasanay lang kasi ako sa normal na trowel ang ginagamit. Ano advantage nito "notched" trowel?. thanks 🙂

notched trowels is the best tools in spreading tile adhesives because it helps the air between the tiles & the adhesive to go out and makes a good bonding ( this is the most common cause of "kapak" in tiles )

If I use Redifix, do I still need to roughen the existing wall tile surface ("tiktik" in local parlance)?

Not anymore.....If you are to use ABC heavy duty tile adhesive then you don't need to use Redifix anymore. Now, if the heavy duty variety is not available then you will need to add redifix to your regular tile adhesive for T2T applications. HTH!
